Fundraiser for cancer patient is Dec. 13

A group of local volunteers is planning a fundraising event to help Rodney “Rod” Patterson, who is battling stage 4 prostate cancer, with metastasis to lymph nodes and bones.

Rod has been a an independent contractor in the Altoona area for decades. For many years, was a coach/trainer for the Altoona Boxing Club.

The fundraiser, “Help Rod Knock Out His Cancer,” will be held Dec. 13 at the Bavarian Hall, Altoona. Tickets are $100, which includes admission and dinner for two people. The evening will include a 200 Club drawing. The doors will open at 5 p.m., dinner at 5:30 p.m. and drawings starting at 6 p.m. and music by a DJ from 9 to 11 p.m.

Monetary donations, in-kind donations of baskets/raffle items and sponsorships are encouraged by Nov. 27. Venmo donations and ticket requests can be made through event co-chairs Tim Pryzbys, 814-414-5736, or Brad Himes, 814-207-4161. Donations also can be mailed to Brad Himes, 221 E. Willow Ave., Altoona, PA 16601.

The event is being sponsored by the Coach Geno Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization, on behalf of Rod Patterson.

Blair Garden Club to meet Nov. 25

Blair Garden Club will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the American Legion Post 516 Social Hall, 1501 N. Juniata St., Hollidaysburg.

This meeting is the club’s holiday social and members should check their yearbooks as to what food item they are to provide.

The program is a Game Night led by club member Linda Renney and her elves. There will be prizes.

The next meeting is Feb. 24.

School retirees to meet Dec. 3

The Blair County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) meets at 11:30 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month.

The Dec. 3 meeting will be held at Marzoni’s in Duncansville. It is a self-pay lunch.

The nonprofit for which the group will be collecting donations for is the Family and Children Services Teen Shelter. In addition to financial donations, other items suggested for donation are paper plates, napkins, toilet paper and Domino’s Pizza gift cards.

The group welcomes new members who have been employed by local school districts or Intermediate Units and are now retired.

Breakfast, Christmas Market events set

The Juniata Civic Association will host a Breakfast in the North Pole from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

A pancake breakfast will be served by Mrs. Claus and the elves. Each child will make a holiday craft to take home. Tickets are $10 and are available at Thompson’s Pharmacy on Chestnut Avenue or at www.juniatacivic.org.

The Christmas Market will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8. There is be a variety of vendors and a soup sampling. Admission is free.

All events are held at 206 W 12th Ave., Altoona.

Police donate to Jared Box Project

When encountering officers this month, you may notice they are a little “Shaggy.”

This is because each year officers from The Altoona Police Department participate in “No Shave November.”

Officers are required to donate at least $50 to participate. Male officers are afforded the opportunity to grow a beard for the duration of the month while female officers are allowed to paint their fingernails.

As a result, the Police Dept donated $3,050 to The Jared Box Project.

OPS to stage ‘Child’s Christmas in Wales’

Off Pitt Street Theater Company will present its original, family Christmas play, “A Child’s Christmas in Wales,” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at at 110 W. Pitt St., Suite 2, in Downtown Bedford.

Adapted from the timeless, classic poem by Dylan Thomas and written by Dawn Ziviello, “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” will help you re-discover the simple joys of Christmas through the eyes and imagination of a child.

A Christmas dinner/dance will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Lambert Hall, 303 Forge Road, Bellefonte.

Ballroom group to hold dance Dec. 6

The Indiana Ballroom Dance Club will hold its Christmas dance on Friday, Dec. 6. Come dine/dance or dance to the sounds of the Swing City Band. Find that holiday glitz and Christmas tie. Prepayment and RSVP required by Nov. 27.

Drag show set for Dec. 21 in Bedford

The Bedford Arts Cooperative will welcome “The Royals — the 9th New BROADway Divine Drag Show” on Saturday, Dec. 21.

This event is for 21 and older only with photo ID. There is a $15 cover and a cash bar.
