Altoona library sets programs, activities for July
Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 Fifth Ave., has announced its programs and activities for July.
– In partnership with the Video Game Clubs of America, the library will host a gaming club from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, July 8, 15, 22 and 29. From tabletop board games, card games, Nintendo Switch and more, each week will be something different to enjoy with friends. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– Chess Club meets from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. All are welcome. Meet at the rear tables on the first floor. No registration necessary. Anyone under the age of 16 need to be accompanied by their legal guardian.
– Plastic Canvas Bookmark project will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, July 7. Learn how to make plastic canvas bookmarks. All materials will be provided. Registration is required, ages 18 and older. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– Join the Kneedle Knerds United for some Fiber Fun in the library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12. Bring your favorite fiber crafts. Experienced crafters may be available to help you get started. This is a free adult program. No registration required.
– Teens ages 12 to 18 are invited to join others from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 10, for Teen DIY Slime. You choose the color and you are making your own slime creation. Various add ins and mica will make your slime shine. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– Become a dementia friend in your community at 11 a.m.Saturday, July 12, in the library board room. The Dementia Friends Project is a community-focused program that increases awareness and understanding of dementia. Those who participate will receive the Dementia Friends packet including a Dementia Friends certificate and how to find resources in your community. Following the session, attendees will learn about the Making Connections Collection and how to make Memory Kits of their own. This is an adult program. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– Sign up for a relaxing evening at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, to learn the Zentangle Method. Patrons will each receive one kit to use and take home, provided by ArtsAltoona. The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. This is a free adult program. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– Teen Squirt Gun Painting will take place at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17, outside the library. Enjoy the library’s assortment of colorful spritzers to create your own masterpiece. – Crafternoon: Suncatchers will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, in the library board room to make a beautiful glass gem suncatcher to catch those rays this summer. All materials will be provided. This is a program for adult patrons. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– Decorative Vases will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, July 21. Transform plain glass vases into a decorative vase for your home. All materials will be provided. This is a program for adult patrons. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– Galaxy Notebooks for Teens will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 24. As the summer reading theme Color Our Worlds starts to come to an end, the library wants to encourage teens to continue creating art. Participants will design the front and back of blank notebooks to look like a galaxy that they can take home and fill with their creations. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
– The Friends of the Library will hold a Game Night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24, in the library board room. No registration is required. This is a free event for ages 12 and older.
– The AAPL Shelf Indulgence Adult Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26. This is a BYOM (bring your own mug) with a choice of coffee or tea. The book for this month is “Yellowface” by R.F. Kuang. Register by calling 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
– Melted Crayon Art will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 29. Participants will use a hot glue method to attach crayons to a blank canvas, then slowly melt them down using a hairdryer. The effect will be that the crayons are melting/dripping down and the colors are mixing together to create unique art to display in your home. This is a program for adult patrons. Mindful Mondays — Chill out and relax this summer with Miss Evelyn in our Mindful Mondays group from 11 a.m. to noon July 7, 14, 21 and 28.
