Yesteryear-Air show
These pictures are from the Air Show held Sunday, Oct. 1, 1961, at Blair County Airport, Martinsburg.
The above photo shows the B-57 plane flown in by Altoona native and USAF assistant vice-chief of staff Gen. Richard M. Montgomery, the general spoke at the air show. Also in the picture is a mock-up model of the X-15, which was the fastest plane in the world at that time.
The picture at left shows a SM-75/PGM-17A Thor missile. This was an intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM). They were deployed in Europe between 1959 and August 1963 while the Air Force developed the inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM).
The air show was attended by an estimated 30,000 people, and the Navy Blue Angels were also part of the show.
The photos were submitted by Victor Curfman of Altoona, formerly of Roaring Spring.
