The Nittany Valley Writers’ Network will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, in the Schlow Library Community Room, 211 S. Allen St., State College.

Doors open at 6 p.m.

Editor Kimberly McElhatten will present “Behind the Submission Button,” an inside look at the submission process through the lens of an editor with more than a decade of experience at Brevity, The Fourth River and Autumn House Press.

Learn what editors are (and aren’t) looking for in submissions and cover letters, how to tell whether a literary magazine or publisher is the right fit for your work and how to better meet editorial standards and expectations.

She will discuss common mistakes and offer practical strategies to help your work stand out when submitting to literary magazines, contests, book prizes and for publication.

In addition to her work as a publishing coach and poet, McElhatten is on the editing teams at Brevity and The Fourth River.

She also directs the Writers Conference of Northern Appalachia Book of the Year.

The event is free and open to the public. The Nittany Valley Writers’ Network is a sharing, supportive community linking local writers of all genres and levels of experience.
