Giger: Tomlin, Narduzzi, Hurdle all facing heavy scrutiny

This is a bad time to be a major coaching figure in Pittsburgh. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin should be squarely on the hot seat after an 0-2 start. Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi just made one of the dumbest decisions you’ll ever see in college football, and he didn’t even think there was anything wrong with it. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle deserves to be ousted once this dreadfully disappointing season ends, although his contract could end up saving his job. At least Penguins coach Mike Sullivan is safe, having signed a four-year contract extension in July that will keep him around ...

Running game issues need to get cleaned up

Quarterback Sean Clifford is tied for the team lead with 108 yards rushing through two games. That’s … not a good thing for Penn State. Yes, the Nittany Lions need Clifford to be able to run the ball some, and he had a beautiful 58-yard scamper Saturday against Buffalo. So this is no knock on him. The concern so far is with PSU’s running backs and run game overall, which looked lousy against Buffalo. Clifford had 58 yards on one carry. The Lions finished the game with 78 yards rushing. Starting tailback Ricky Slade carried three times for 8 yards and fumbled once. He had ...

Pitt-PSU game can go away now

It’s Penn State-Pitt week once again. The last one we will see for some time. And truth be told, I’m perfectly fine with that. At the risk of sounding blasphemous around these here parts, it’s OK with me that the Nittany Lions and Panthers are wrapping up their four-year series and will not be playing annually for the foreseeable future. A lot of you may strongly disagree with that. I’m guessing if you’re reading this in the actual newspaper (not online), you probably do disagree. The overwhelming majority of newspaper readers these days are older ...

Giger: Night games are a blast! Let’s have lots of them

I think Neil’s bedtime is 10:30. He starts to get a little cranky after that. So it’s understandable he doesn’t like a bunch of night games. Penn State’s just poking the bear scheduling these things. I love night games. I stay up late anyway, so it’s no bother to me. I’m guessing most of you love night games, too. We all have our different reasons. But the biggest reasons probably have to be the day-long tailgate party (and consuming extra adult beverages for many) outside the stadium, followed by the incredible atmosphere inside once the game gets under way. Beaver ...

Giger: Firing of Ryan simply makes no sense at all

This makes no sense whatsoever and is a totally disgraceful move by the Pirates organization, which has so many people who are bad at their jobs, yet they decided to scapegoat the wrong guy. Curve manager Michael Ryan got fired Tuesday, and he was told the news by Bucs farm director Larry Broadway. Ryan is better at his job than Broadway is at his. So the wrong person got fired. The decision apparently was made by GM Neal Huntington and assistant GM Kyle Stark. Ryan is better at his job than Huntington and Stark are at theirs. So the wrong person got fired. Pirates manager Clint ...

The cupcake business: Scheduling FCS foes all about the Benjamins

Penn State embarrassed a really, really bad Idaho team Saturday, 79-7, and by this point, we all know why these kinds of games are played. Big teams eat up the cupcake opponents, who in turn get tons of money to take back to their campus and use it to fund the rest of their athletic ...
