BG boys, Williamsburg girls advance; BG girls’ reign ends

The Bishop Guilfoyle Academy boys and Williamsburg girls punched their tickets to the PIAA final four with victories on Saturday, while the BG girls and Penn Cambria girls were eliminated.

The BG boys survived against Westmont Hilltop by prevailing, 50-46, in overtime at Claysburg-Kimmel High School in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

BG will face Trinity in the PIAA semifinals on Tuesday at a site and time to be announced. Trinity defeated BG during the regular season, 68-60, on Jan. 10.

The Williamsburg girls basketball team knocked off Bishop Carroll Catholic, 53-48, in the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse.

Freshmen accounted for 36 of the Lady Pirates’ 53 points.

Meanwhile, the two-time defending PIAA Class 1A champion Bishop Guilfoyle Academy Lady Marauders were upset by Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy at Claysburg-Kimmel High School, 71-58.

Naomi Crispin fired in 37 points for Saint Joe’s in its win over BG.

Williamsburg and Saint Joseph’s will meet in the PIAA semifinals on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined. Saint Joseph’s beat Williamsburg, 72-44, on Jan. 28 and 75-73 in the District 6 1A consolation game on Feb. 26.

The Penn Cambria girls saw their season end with a 49-38 setback to Oakland Catholic in the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals at Armstrong High School in Kittanning.
