Cumberland Valley wide receiver Caiden Pines and his Eagles teammates spoiled Altoona’s senior night festivities as they took down the Mountain Lions, 33-20, Friday night at Mansion Park.
Pines sprinted for a 34-yard run on the first play from scrimmage to set up an eventual 13-yard Grant Shepley touchdown pass to Adam Somerville for the first score of the game.
“Give them credit, they’re a very well-coached football team,” Altoona coach Vince Nedimyer Jr. said. “Their kids executed. First drive of the game, we got punched in the mouth.”
The Mountain Lions fumbled on their first play from scrimmage, an uncharacteristic mistake from senior running back Bron Mosley.
“We fumble and things could have gone really, really south in a hurry, but it didn’t,” Nedimyer said. “They scored twice in the first two possessions, but we come back and answer.”
Mosley and senior quarterback Brennen Freiwald did everything they could to will Altoona back in the game, but every time Altoona had an ounce of momentum, Cumberland Valley instantly took it away. Freiwald cut the lead to six in the second quarter while Mosley added two second half touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to claw all the way back into the game.
Play of the game: Altoona had just scored to cut the lead to 27-13 before Cumberland Valley’s Pines dashed 91 yards to the end zone on the ensuing kickoff to put the nail in the coffin of the Mountain Lions.
Player of the game: Pines ran for 34 yards, hauled in a touchdown pass and 69 receiving yards in addition to his kick return for a touchdown.
Unsung heroes: Mosley and Freiwald made up 79.5 percent of the rushing yards against the Eagles with Mosley running for 115 yards while Freiwald chipped in 60.
Most vital statistic: Mosley fumbled on the Lions’ first play from scrimmage, setting up a Cumberland Valley touchdown. It put the Eagles ahead 13-0 just 2:18 into the game.
Nedimyer: “The kids up front, they give us the opportunity to make plays. Our offensive line did a phenomenal job again, but we definitely have got to get better. We’ve got to get better in spots, and we’ve got to just believe we can play.”
Cumberland Valley coach Josh Oswalt: “That’s a good football team over there. Mosley is probably the toughest back we’ve had to face all year to this point. He was tough, and their kids really wanted it on their senior night.”.”
Notable: Prior to the game, Altoona honored 17 seniors … Altoona recorded three sacks, one each from Wesley Baumgartner, MJ Harrington and Logan Wuckovich … Mosley eclipsed the 100-yard plateau for the seventh time this season
Records: Cumberland Valley (6-4); Altoona (4-6)
Next week: Altoona is at Mifflin County in the District 6 6A semifinals; Cumberland Valley has a bye for the District 3 playoffs.
