Panther batters can’t break through Harper

MIFFLINTOWN — With a chance to advance to the District 6 Class 4A final, Penn Cambria just couldn’t crack Juniata’s Dawson Harper. Juniata is now 13-7 and will be heading to PNG Field in Altoona to face top-seeded Bellefonte. Coach Nick Beward is not sugar-coating the battle that lays ahead for him and his team this Friday. “We know what lies ahead, we know how good Bellefonte is,” Beward said. “But, we’re going to go there with absolutely ...

Eagles survive, advance

SIDMAN — Despite losing five starters from last year’s state championship team, the Tyrone baseball team knew it would have an even bigger target on its back once playoffs rolled around than it did during the regular season. The Golden Eagles pounded Forest Hills throughout the game, but then had to fight off a pesky Rangers rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. FH put up four runs in the seventh, but Tyrone was able to get the final out with the winning run on first base to advance with a 10-8 victory in District 6 Class 3A quarterfinal action on Thursday. “Some of them ...

Dragons arise in second inning, pummel WH

MARTINSBURG — Jonah Snowberger found himself in a jam with the bases loaded in the top of the second inning of a District 6 Class 3A quarterfinal game Thursday against Westmont Hilltop. The senior pitcher worked his way out of it, fanning two batters to close out the side, and then he and the Scarlet Dragons made the Hilltoppers pay for it. Central scored 12 runs in the bottom of the frame, kicked off by a two-run RBI single by Snowberger, and the Dragons advanced to the semifinals with a 15-0 win in four innings. “I’ve said that we need situations like that,” Central coach ...

Small things add up in Marauders’ victory

BLAIRSVILLE — Making the plays often go a long way toward victory, especially in a game like baseball. Bishop Guilfoyle took advantage of two errors and a hit batsman in the sixth inning of its 8-3 victory against River Valley in a District 6 Class 2A baseball playoff game on Thursday afternoon at Wyotech Park. “We always focus on doing the small things right,” winning pitcher Austin Beauchamp said. The fifth-seeded Marauders (12-7) will face top-seeded Portage in a semifinal-round playoff game on Tuesday. “They’re undefeated. They won the WestPAC (championship),” ...
