UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State women’s volleyball coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley announced the hiring of Abby Detering as an assistant coach.

Detering, a former All-American setter for the Nittany Lions, spent the past four seasons on the coaching staff at Rutgers.

Detering brings seven years of collegiate coaching experience to Penn State. Her first three seasons at Rutgers were as an assistant before she was promoted to associate head coach for the 2025 season.

The Scarlet Knights’ win total last season was their highest in 13 years.

Lopez honored

Penn State Altoona sophomore Gabriel Lopez was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Week in men’s tennis.

Lopez won both doubles and singles in last Monday’s 6-1 victory over Waynesburg.

In doubles, Lopez and partner Nick Beard triumphed 6-0 over their opponents in No. 1 doubles. In No. 3 singles, Lopez prevailed via a 6-4, 6-3 decision.

This is Lopez’s second AMCC Player of the Week award. This season, the sophomore holds a 7-3 record overall, including a 3-1 mark against conference opponents. In doubles, he is 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the AMCC.

Top defender

Penn State Altoona men’s volleyball’s sophomore outside hitter Jack McKenna was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

McKenna helped his team go 3-1 last week.

The sophomore registered 10 digs and a block assist against Buffalo State and a career-high 22 digs in a win over Hilbert College.

On the week, McKenna totaled 40 digs across 14 sets, averaging 2.86 digs per set. He also posted a .947 reception percentage on the week.
