PITTSBURGH — Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he thinks veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers will give it another go with the team.
Rodgers said last year Tomlin was one of the big reasons he signed with the Steelers, whose quarterback room now includes third-round draft pick Drew Allar to go with Mason Rudolph and Will Howard.
Tomlin will be an analyst on NBC for the 2026 season. The Steelers are still waiting for Rodgers, 42, to make up his mind on whether or not he wants to play another season.
“I just think being around (Rodgers) for the 12 months I (was) around him, he’s got a love affair with the game of football,” Tomlin said during an intermission in NBC’s coverage of the NBA playoffs on Sunday night. “And not only the game, but the process. The informal moments. The development of younger guys. The interaction with teammates. I think he has an addiction to that, and there’s only one way to feed it.”
Tomlin also shared some thoughts on why he stepped down after 19 seasons after the Steelers lost to the Houston Texans in the first round of the NFL playoffs. Mike McCarthy is now coaching the team.
“I thought it was a good time for the organization, to be quite honest with you,” Tomlin said. “We didn’t have a lot of success in the playoffs in recent years, and there’s just some veteran players there — guys like Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt and (Chris) Boswell — that I just thought were worthy of the excitement and the optimism associated with new leadership.”
Signings
The Steelers announced they’ve agreed to terms with six undrafted free agents — DB Devan Boykin (Indiana), LB Daylan Carnell (Missouri), DL Kevin Jobity Jr. (Syracuse), K Laith Marjan (Kansas), TE Lake McRee (USC) and TE Chamon Metayer (Arizona State).
