Rangers’ All-Star Seager hurt before game begins
MLB notebook
CLEVELAND — Texas Rangers All-Star shortstop Corey Seager was removed from Tuesday’s game before his at-bat in the first inning with back discomfort, the team said.
Seager, who was in the starting lineup right up until minutes before the first pitch, recently returned from a concussion sustained in a home-plate collision with Kansas City catcher Carter Jensen on June 11. The 32-year-old also missed significant time this season with back spasms that developed into inflammation.
Seager was in the starting lineup for Tuesday’s game batting third. But the Rangers pinch-hit for him in the first with Cam Cauley taking his spot and popping out. Cauley stayed in the game at second base with Nicky Lopez shifting from second to shortstop.
Seager had been just 1 for 10, but walked five times in 15 at-bats since the five-time All-Star returned from the concussion.
On the IL
MILWAUKEE — Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dane Myers has gone on the 10-day injured list with a bruised left shoulder one day after crashing into an outfield wall and getting carted off the field. The Reds announced the move before their Tuesday night game with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Myers’ left shoulder hit the wall as he made a running backhanded catch during the Reds’ 5-3 loss to the Brewers on Monday.
Getting better
NEW YORK — New York Yankees starting pitcher Max Fried took another step in his recovery from a bone bruise in his left elbow, throwing about 30 pitches in a two-inning simulated game Tuesday.
Fried was on the mound for about 20 minutes and used all his pitches while facing Ryan McMahon and Trent Grisham, who are slated to be activated off the injured list Friday.
Fried recently started throwing bullpen sessions and will face hitters again before Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Twins.
The 32-year-old left-hander has been out since May 13, when he left a start in Baltimore after three innings when he velocity noticeably dropped and he threw only 34 of 61 pitches for strikes.
The Yankees went into Tuesday night’s game on a six-game losing streak.
