DOVER, Del. — Dystany Spurlock became the first Black woman to compete in one of NASCAR’s three national series in her debut in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Dover Motor Speedway on Friday, according to NASCAR.com.
Spurlock, 34, raced in the No. 69 MBM Motorsports Ford at the track in Delaware.
“It feels so amazing,” Spurlock said in a recent “Good Morning America” interview. “Being a first is never what I strived to be. I just so happened to be that. But being able to be that example for other little girls and little boys that look like me is amazing. I didn’t have that representation when I grew up, and this road has not been easy.”
She made her stock car racing debut in March, finishing seventh in the ARCA Menards Series East — one of NASCAR’s developmental series — while driving the No. 66 MBM Ford at Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina.
In 2025, she made her pro stock motorcycle debut, becoming the second Black woman in history to compete in the Virginia NHRA Nationals.
Fraser honorary Indy 500 starter
INDIANAPOLIS — Academy Award winning actor Brendan Fraser has been selected as the honorary starter for next week’s Indianapolis 500, race organizers announced Friday.
Fraser was born in Indianapolis but was raised in Europe and Canada. He’s returning to his hometown to appear atop the flag stand above Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s iconic yard of bricks for the start of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
The May 24 race already has sold its entire allotment of approximately 275,000 reserved seats.
Fraser’s newest role is playing General Dwight D. Eisenhower in the upcoming film “Pressure,” which follows the general and then future president and Captain James Stagg in the 72 hours leading up to the D-Day invasion in France. Sneak peeks will be held throughout Memorial Day weekend with the film premiering in theaters May 29.
He starred in “The Whale,” which led to winning the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2023. He’s best known for his role as Rick O’Connell in the “Mummy” series of films.headline goes here

Swiss beat US at World Games
ZURICH — Switzerland began its quest for a first ice hockey world championship title by defeating the United States 3-1.
Sven Andrighetto and Pius Suter each contributed two points. Goaltender Leonardo Genoni made 19 saves in Zurich. Alex Steeves scored for the U.S. in the final period.
Switzerland was runner-up for the past two years and hopes to finally break through with home advantage. In other games, Canada held off Sweden 5-3. Canada is the most successful nation with 28 titles but wants to rebound from last year’s fifth-place finish. Finland beat Germany 3-1 and the Czechs topped Denmark 4-1.
The Americans have only two men on the roster from last year, forwards Mason Lohrei and Isaac Howard, when they won their second world championship and first since 1933. They prevailed over Switzerland 1-0 in overtime in the final.
The U.S. faces Britain, a newcomer to the top division, on Sunday.
