Brewers’ P suspended for his antics
MLB notebook
HOUSTON — Milwaukee reliever Abner Uribe received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his inappropriate actions towards the St. Louis dugout earlier this week, MLB announced Friday.
Uribe is appealing the suspension so he will be available Friday night when the Brewers open a three-game series at Houston.
The suspension comes after Uribe’s behavior Tuesday night following an inning-ending strikeout in a 6-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Uribe retired Alec Burleson on a called third strike with two outs and runners on first and second in the eighth, the only inning he pitched. Uribe then made three WWE-style crotch chops while facing the Cardinals dugout.
The Cardinals challenged the call, which was close, but narrowly confirmed to be at the bottom of the strike zone.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said after the game that he was embarrassed by Uribe’s antics and that it was unacceptable. He reiterated that point Friday after the suspension was announced.
Tigers lose pitcher
CHICAGO — Detroit Tigers pitcher Casey Mize is on the 15-day injured list with right adductor inflammation. Mize and closer Kenley Jansen both left the Tigers’ 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday with injuries. Jansen went on the injured list Thursday due to pelvic inflammation. Mize was joined him on the injured list Friday, retroactive to Thursday. The Tigers activated right-hander Beau Briske from the 60-day injured list and put him on their 26-man roster.
Out two months
NEW YORK — Miami Marlins starting pitcher Eury Perez is expected to miss about two months with a bizarre leg injury sustained while he was stretching in the dugout.
The right-hander exited Wednesday’s start in Toronto after striking out a season-high nine in four shutout innings because his right hamstring spasmed while he was doing lateral lunges on the bench to limber up for the fifth. He was in such pain he needed assistance from a teammate to descend the steps into the clubhouse. The 23-year-old Perez is 3-6 with a 4.60 ERA in 12 starts this season, but his last two outings were excellent.
Help in Philly
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies made a roster move to their bench prior to the start of a key three game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday night, as theyhave optioned utility player Otto Kemp to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and are expected to add switch-hitting outfielder Steward Berroa to the big league roster.
Berroa has four home runs and 20 RBIs in 38 games for Lehigh this seasons.
