Everything that could go right from the first pitch of Saturday night’s Park Home Altoona Baseball Classic’s championship game for East End entry Greenwood Meadows did go right.
Sparked by Tournament Co-MVP Cam Pike’s one-hit outing in 3ª innings, the Greenwood offense went to work from there as it crushed Marana Electric of the Altoona Area Baseball Association, 14-0, in four innings at the East Little League Field to capture their third straight tournament championship.
“He was great as usual,” Greenwood Meadows coach Mike Thrower said of Pike. “He’s been pitching really well over the last month or two. He’s been a guy that we know if we get Cam on the mound, he’s going to shut them down, and give us a really good chance to win the game.”
Marana Electric’s best chance to get on the board came in the first inning with runners at first and second. Pike issued a pair of walks. However, he answered that by striking out the next three batters to thwart the scoring opportunity.
Pike racked up six strikeouts with three walks and one hit allowed before Braeson McGinnis finished things off with a strikeout of his own.
“He pitched well, and when you’re playing a great team like that, you can’t have any mistakes,” Marana Electric coach Bret Woodring said. “You have a mistake here or there, it opens up the floodgates. I’m proud of our team. We made a heck of a run, best we’ve played all year going against the best team in the city. I’m proud of these guys.”
Meanwhile at the plate, Pike wasted no time supporting his efforts on the mound as he scored on an RBI double by McGinnis –who shared the MVP honor — which helped give Greenwood Meadows a 3-0 lead after the first.
“We just jumped on them early,” Thrower said. “They’ve been playing really well. We’ve been watching a lot of their games. They’re a really scrappy team, they have really good pitching, they play good defense. We just we were able to get a few runs across early and keep capitalizing.”
After taking advantage of a fielding and pitching miscue to extend the lead in the second, the route was on in the third as Brooks Klausman got things going with an RBI-single. McGinnis would strike again later with a two-run double.
Greenwood Meadows didn’t let up from there, either, as Maverick Wentz smacked an RBI-single of his own before Gabe Meese chipped in one of his own to cap off the explosion.
“One of the things that has helped us all year is the bottom of our lineup,” Thrower said. “We have a bunch of scrappy hitters that can get on base. Usually once we are able to turn the line up and get our big guys up, then they’ll do the damage and bring the kids in for us.”
Overall, Greenwood Meadows scored nine runs on seven hits and took 15 turns at the plate as part of the game clinching outburst.
Woodring is proud of our how far his team has come and hopes this serves as a spring board for growth heading into 2026.
“We’ve been preaching that since the start of this tournament,” he said. “This where we want to be. We always talk about setting goals, and this is one of our goals for next year.”
Greenwood Meadows’ Jackson Winterburn received the tournament’s Sportsmanship Award honor.
There’s still one more tournament for Greenwood Meadows to play as they take part in the Courtesy KIA Little World Series in Claysburg.
