Royer, Gorsuch have big nights in win

WILLIAMSBURG — Coming off a loss to Berlin Brothersvalley on Friday, the Williamsburg Lady Pirates came into Monday night’s District 6 Class 1A quarterfinal matchup against Blacklick Valley to get back on track and clinch a berth in the state playoffs.
Behind a 36-point night out of its star combo, the Lady Pirates came out on top with a 67-29 victory at home.
Junior guard LeeAnna Royer led all Lady Pirate scorers with 19 points.
“They put a lot of pressure on LeeAnna,” Lady Pirate coach Angela Detwiler said. “I think that actually opened up a lot for her because she’s so quick, and she was able to go around and penetrate.”
In the first quarter, the Lady Pirates held Blacklick Valley to three points, thanks to vigorous intensity on the defensive end of the floor.
“I thought we all did good, we came out and played really hard,” said Royer, whose team was up 22-3 after one quarter. “We were all really ready to play hard and get after it.”
The Lady Pirates struggled out of the gate in their previous contest, but were pleased with their strong start on Monday.
“Our last game we didn’t come out ready to play,” Detwiler said. “We knew tonight that it was something we needed to focus on.”
Sophomore forward Levada Gorsuch contributed nine of her 17 total points in the first half en route to a 38-14 lead going into halftime for Williamsburg.
“We knew that we had to come in here and get this win tonight,” Gorsuch said. “It was really important for us.”
As the game went on, Williamsburg’s quickness became too much for Blacklick Valley to handle.
“We have a lot of young girls,” said Lady Viking coach Rich Price, whose team was outscored 20-1 in the final frame. “We have to get used to the intensity of a playoff game.”
With the win, the Lady Pirates (20-4) will now face Bishop Guilfoyle in the semifinals. Williamsburg and the Lady Marauders have been long-time rivals and Detwiler, a BG alumna, expects a great atmosphere in the matchup.
“I think it’s going to be packed; I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.” said Detwiler, who also got 13 points from Anastasia Ranalli in Monday’s win. “I think it’s going to be an exciting game.”
Blacklick Valley’s season is now complete. Averi Yewcic led her team with nine points. The Lady Vikings finished at 21-3.
