Sled hockey this weekend
The Sitting Bulls Sled Hockey organization will host a tournament this weekend for teams that compete in the Northeast Sled Hockey League Metropolitan Division at Galactic Ice in Lakemont.
The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins and the Philadelphia Hammerheads USA Warriors will compete Saturday and Sunday along with the Sitting Bulls adult intermediate level teams. The Sitting Bulls games will be played Saturday at 9 a.m. and again at 3:30 p.m.
Game will also be held at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
The Sitting Bulls organization supports both a youth novice team and the adult intermediate sled hockey teams, which are made up of physically challenged athletes from Johnstown, Altoona, Somerset, Indiana and other parts of Blair County.
Sled hockey athletes use two shortened hockey sticks with stainless steel picks on one end to dig into the ice and move. Game play follows all of the same rules as stand-up ice hockey and includes hard checking, raised puck shooting and penalty killing as part of the game.
