Sideline Cancer heading home

LOUISVILLE — Sideline Cancer saw its 2024 run in The Basketball Tournament come to an end in the second round Monday night, falling 71-69 to “The Ville,” a team of Louisville alumni.
The Hollidaysburg-based Sideline Cancer team, which plays in honor of the Greg and Cathy Griffith Foundation, trailed 63-59 entering the Elam Ending period.
The target score was set at 71 points, and Sideline Cancer scored the first points of the frame as a Cullen Russo lay-up made it 63-63.
The Ville responded with a score before Chris Coffey and Marcellus Earlington baskets extended the score to 69-65 and brought it within two of the target score. Sideline had its chance but came up empty on three possessions while The Ville took advantage and brought the game to a 69-69 tie.
Montrezl Harrell was fouled on a shot attempt on the next possession and made two free throws to give his team a 71-69 victory.
David Johnson scored 18 points for The Ville to lead all scorers. Hampton graduate Jermaine Marrow led Sideline Cancer with 15 points, and Saint Francis graduate Keith Braxton scored 14 points while adding 11 rebounds.
In other TBT action, the Happy Valley Hoopers, a Penn State alumni team, downed Stars of Storrs, a UConn alumni team, 94-83, at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh behind Greg Lee’s 22 points.
Happy Valley advanced to the round of 16 and will face Pitt’s alumni team, the Zoo Crew, at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Pittsburgh with a berth in the quarterfinals at stake. Mike Young led the Zoo Crew with 23 points, and Nike Sibande scored 21 in a 91-79 win over Best Virginia, West Virginia’s alumni team.
