New costs for Blair Township businesses

As a business owner in Blair Township, I am writing to express serious concern regarding the proposal by newly elected Township Supervisor Jacob Wible to impose a per-machine “licensing fee” on businesses operating Skills machines. Though described as a licensing fee, its practical effect is an additional tax on small businesses. Regardless of terminology, it creates a new financial burden for locally owned establishments already coping with rising costs for utilities, insurance, payroll and property expenses. This proposal is especially troubling given prior campaign assurances ...

Are they really SAVEing America?

State Rep. Glenn Thompson and state Sen. Mike McCormick would have us believe that non-citizens are committing election fraud by voting illegally. Both back the SAVE America Act — legislation requiring you and me to provide documentation of citizenship each time we vote, whether in person or by mail. Why? The idea that election security requires proof of citizenship every time we vote rests on the assertion that non-citizens are voting. Which is just not true. Numerous reputable studies conclude that voting by non-citizens is extremely rare, demonstrating that the election ...

Taking Maduro not about drugs or oil

In the coming weeks we should not be surprised to hear the President announce that Venezuelan President, Nicholas Maduro has confirmed that they interfered in the 2020 election. And that the interference was in blue counties and states, confirming that the 2020 election was stolen. And they will find a way to link Maduro with records that the FBI seized from Fulton County, Georgia. It is clear that you cannot deal with a delusional president. Not sure what his actions might be next, but one way or another, Trump has no intention of losing power or leaving office. If you think oil or ...

Pressure mounts to end gerrymandering

It’s the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence; the revolution isn’t over. Philosophers and evolving historical events to present times have established that liberation is not the mere transfer of power from one oppressor to another but from a fundamental transformation of humanization. Martin Luther King’s words of wisdom, “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor. It must be demanded by the oppressed,” applies today. The Pennsylvania Legislature has become an oppressor to fair and just governing practices exacerbated by cheating or ...

A message to MAGA

First of all, congratulations on your unwavering commitment to the past. Not everyone has the stamina to be mad about the same things for nearly a decade, and frankly, that level of consistency is impressive. Historians will one day study this era and say, “Wow, they really meant it.” Thank you as well for redefining patriotism. Who knew loving your country meant distrusting elections, courts, scientists, journalists, teachers, librarians, doctors, and occasionally the Constitution itself? It’s a bold rebrand, confusing, yes, but bold. I also admire the flexibility. “Law and ...

Agencies to blame for wetland degradation

Persistent pollution has been degrading Old Crow Wetlands in Huntingdon since construction began at an adjacent site last summer. The DEP improperly issued the permit for this development without thoroughly assessing the site, as demonstrated by sedimentation events occurring repeatedly since construction began. No corrective or punitive action has been taken. Furthermore, PennDOT ignored the threat that the development posed to Old Crow Wetland, which is a PennDOT mitigation site established to compensate for the destruction and degradation of wetlands due to road construction. In ...
