Where are the moderate Republicans?

In a popular song from the 1960s, Peter, Paul and Mary ask the listener,”Where have all the flowers gone?”

For those of you who don’t remember (or who weren’t even born yet), it was a song challenging people to rise up against what was happening in society then and challenging citizens to confront all that was wrong at that time.

For today, I would like to change the question to read several ways. First, I would like to ask, “Where have all the moderate Republicans gone?”

There is little evidence that our Republican politicians and voters are still the party of Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan.

It seems that Republicans have abandoned the belief that there is value in middle of the road bipartisan solutions to our pressing problems such as immigration, the environment, race relations and gun control to name a few.

The right fringe of our party has taken control of solutions, and in many instances have thwarted any and all reasonable alternatives to our problems. The extremists are now in charge of what was the Grand Old Party.

Second, I would propose this question, “Where have all the open minded, compassionate, educated and truth-seeking Republicans gone?”

When we see the lies, the racist behavior, the flip-flopping on issues and the divisive actions of our president and that 88 percent of Republicans support the president and that no level headed moderate has stepped forward to challenge the candidacy of this unhinged man and that our elected representatives in Congress condone such actions of this narcissistic president, it is easy to conclude that our party is chasing away the middle of the road thinkers.

I challenge all Republicans to join me in saying enough is enough.

Join me in standing up for right and decency. Join me in taking back our party from those who represent only the fringes. Some of us still believe it is not too late.

As Peter Paul and Mary concluded, “When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?”
