George Edward Plisinski Sr., 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Greenfield, Ind., leaving a legacy of craftsmanship, service, integrity and devotion to family. One of the last true railroad blacksmiths of his generation, George was a proud veteran and a man whose work ethic touched all who knew him.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Kenneth and Harriet Plisinski. George was also preceded in death by a beloved son, Kenneth Plisinski.
Surviving are his sons, Joseph (Julie) Plisinski and George (Joyce) Plisinski Jr.; grandchildren: Austin, Ashlyn, George III and Alek; great-grandchildren, Kaisan and George IV; siblings: Paul (Mag) Plisinski, Joyce and Nancy; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.
George graduated from Altoona Area High School and attended Tri-State College, now Trine University, where he was a proud member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. He later honorably served in the United States Army.
After his military service, George began a railroad career spanning more than five decades, starting as a blacksmith apprentice with the Penn Central Railroad in 1969 and continuing with Conrail and Amtrak, retiring in 2020. Recognized as “The Last Blacksmith” at Amtrak’s historic Beech Grove Shops, he preserved a disappearing craft with strength, precision and dedication, earning the admiration of generations of railroaders.
Beyond work, George was happiest with family and friends and will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, sense of humor and willingness to help others. His legacy lives on through the family he loved and the many friends and coworkers he influenced throughout his extraordinary career.
The family expresses sincere gratitude for the prayers, support and kindness offered during this difficult time.
Arrangements are by Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield, Ind.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the City of Greenfield Animal Management in memory of George Edward Plisinski Sr., reflecting his love and compassion for animals.
