Sheldon (Shell) Ray Kauffman, 89, of Altoona, peacefully passed away Monday Aug. 26, 2024, at UPMC Altoona.
Shell was born on Oct. 25, 1934, in Altoona, to William Henry Sr. and Mary Margaret (Halton) Kauffman. Shell was drafted into the Army in 1957 and honorably served his country as a corporal until 1959. He married the love of his life, Connie Jane, on June 18, 1960. They resided in Juniata, where they raised their two children and celebrated 52 wonderful years of marriage together.
Shell started his career with Morrison Cove Dairy as “the milkman,” where he delivered milk for many years. Throughout the years, he’d share stories with his family about “when I delivered milk …” and the trials and triumphs of what life was like during those years. Eventually, he moved on, where he took employment with Fleming Foods, as a truck driver, eventually retiring from Fleming. After retirement, he worked part time with Fiore Auto Sales, where he drove the shuttle car a couple days per week for 18 years.
Shell was a strong-willed and fearless man. If his mind was made up, he wouldn’t be told otherwise. He’d precisely iron and starch his clothes and his slacks were always adorned with that crisp pleat line down the front. Much to the same, he’d ensure his hair was meticulously combed each day, not a single strand out of place. He always wanted to look and feel his best and always presented himself to the world that way.
Shell faithfully served the Lord Jesus Christ all his life and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He could be heard singing the hymns during the Saturday evening or Sunday morning service, because he was typically the loudest member of the congregation. He had a beautiful and resounding voice that reached far beyond the walls of the church. He praised Lord Jesus with his gift, and it will certainly be one that is incredibly missed by his family and friends.
Shell is survived in death by his daughter, Sherry Pritchert of Fredericksburg, Va.; and three grandchildren: Justin (Tammy) Kauffman, Ian (Diana) Thomas and Brittany (Michael) Layne. He was blessed with 14 great-grandchildren: Oktober, Gage, Ashton, Finn, Aslan, Amberleigh, Brooklynn, Jayden, James, Ellie, Vincent, Porter, Harvey and Savannah; and one great-granddaughter, Deliliah. Additionally, he is also survived by his brother-in-law Harry Yeager; sister-in-law Sally Yeager; and his loving niece Lisa Berrier, who acted as a caretaker for him, amongst many other nieces and nephews.
Shell is predeceased in death by his wife, Connie Jane; his son, Stephen R. Kauffman; and 17-year-old great-grandson, Nicholas R. Layne, along with his mother and father and several siblings.
Family and friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024, at Mauk and Yates Funeral Home Inc., 719 N. Fourth Ave., Altoona, 16601.
