Altoona woman held for drugs, harboring missing juvenile
Cassarly allegedly had teenager hide illicit drugs on his person
A city woman was taken into custody after allegedly harboring a missing juvenile and having him hide illicit drugs on his person.
Elizabeth Ann Cassarly, 44, was arraigned Saturday by Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio on single felony counts of interference with the custody of children and endangering the welfare of children, two misdemeanor counts of corruption of minors and single misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. She was remanded to the Blair County Prison in lieu of $40,000 bail.
Altoona officers were investigating an aggravated assault on June 2 when they spoke with the mother of a missing 13-year-old juvenile, who was located with Cassarly in her silver Kia Forte in the area of 10th Street and 16th Avenue. The juvenile was found in the vehicle’s front seat and arrested for a separate incident. When he was searched, officers found a pink zip-top bag on his person. The bag contained a loaded needle and a glass smoking device with a white residue that later tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Officers deployed K-9 Officer Blue to conduct an open-air sniff test and Blue alerted officers to the presence of controlled substances within the vehicle. Inside the vehicle, officers located a small amount of marijuana THC and two air soft guns, the police report states.
In an interview, the juvenile’s mother said her son had not been home in about two weeks and that, while he would stop by and say “hi,” he had not slept in his bed for weeks. She told officers she had learned that her son was staying with Cassarly in hotel rooms. The juvenile’s mother told Cassarly several times over Facebook that she and her daughter needed to stay away from the juvenile, the report states.
Officers then interviewed the juvenile, who confirmed he had been staying in hotel rooms with Cassarly and her two daughters for the last couple weeks. When asked what he did in the hotel rooms, the juvenile said he would smoke marijuana. When shown a video of a vehicle doing doughnuts in the Macy’s parking lot, the juvenile said Cassarly was sleeping, so he and a second juvenile took her car. He told officers he was in the passenger seat recording, the report states.
When asked why he was staying with Cassarly and not his mother, the juvenile said Cassarly let him do whatever he wanted while his mother had rules. Officers then questioned the juvenile on the pink pouch found on his person, to which the juvenile said Cassarly told him to hide it in his pants because police don’t search juveniles, according to the affidavit.
Cassarly is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 17 in front of
DeAntonio.
