Altoona woman accused of lighting roommate’s mattress on fire
Gordon arrested on endangerment, arson charges
A city woman is behind bars after allegedly burning her roommate’s mattress and punching a television when she learned her roommate had gotten a protection from abuse order against her.
Sophia Lauren Gordon, 25, was arraigned Friday by Magisterial District Judge Benjamin F. Jones on a felony count of arson – inhabited building or structure, two misdemeanor counts each of recklessly endangering another person and criminal mischief and two summary counts of harassment. She was remanded to the Blair County Prison after being unable to pay her $150,000 bail.
Altoona police responded to a residence along the 400 block of 12th Avenue about 12:30 p.m. Friday for a report of a woman, later identified as Gordon, setting items on fire inside the home. Upon arrival, officers saw the victim pointing at Gordon, who was driving away from the scene in her vehicle. Officers stopped Gordon and, after asking her to exit the vehicle, saw her hand was bleeding. Gordon told officers the injury was caused by her punching a television within the residence, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Gordon said she and the victim had been arguing and that she called the police on the victim twice for “acting crazy.” Gordon told officers she had gotten mad after finding out the victim had gotten a protection from abuse order against her, at which time she punched the television, the police report states.
Officers entered the residence and saw that the victim’s mattress was burnt, with the victim saying Gordon had set it on fire. When asked about the mattress, Gordon told officers that the victim was trying to frame her so she could steal Gordon’s property, the report states.
The victim, who was accompanied by a witness, said she and Gordon had previously been in an intimate relationship, but their relationship was declining due to Gordon’s behavior. The victim said police were called to the residence Thursday because Gordon was trying to have her involuntarily committed for emergency inpatient mental health treatment, or “302’d,” the report states.
The victim said she invited the witness to stay with her because she did not want to be alone with Gordon. On Friday morning, the victim left the Blair County Courthouse after filing a PFA against Gordon and returned to the residence with the witness about 12:30 p.m., the report states.
The victim told officers Gordon then went upstairs and could be heard walking in the victim’s bedroom. The victim said smoke alarms went off and she assumed it was due to Gordon smoking. When the victim went upstairs, she saw Gordon running from the victim’s bedroom into her own bedroom. The victim asked Gordon what she did, to which Gordon started to laugh and said “you might want to check that,” according to the affidavit.
The victim said she entered her bedroom and saw flames coming off her mattress, which she and the witness managed to extinguish. The victim told officers she immediately called her lawyer and, when Gordon heard the call, said, “you got a PFA, I can do whatever I want now.” Gordon then ran downstairs and punched the television, the report states.
The victim said she and the witness were standing on the staircase when Gordon took her lit cigarette and threw it down the victim’s shirt, after which Gordon grabbed her car keys and left the residence. The victim told officers she stood behind Gordon’s car to stop her from leaving but Gordon ultimately drove away before being stopped by police, the report states.
A search of the residence by the Altoona Fire Department yielded numerous lighters inside Gordon’s bedroom, along with a cigarette butt on the staircase, according to the affidavit.
Gordon is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 10 in front of Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio.
