Two kittens might have used up one of their nine lives as they traveled from Claysburg to Altoona on Tuesday morning, tucked in the engine compartment of a Claysburg woman’s car.

According to Altoona Fire Department Captain Josh Link, firefighters were dispatched about 8 a.m. to the Graystone Grande Palazzo on Seventh Avenue for a call about two cats being stuck in a car engine. The vehicle’s owner heard the kittens meowing, according to reports.

Grande Palazzo maintenance worker Jim Kulik said he wasn’t expecting to see firefighters pulling some parts from the car to reach the kittens.

It took three firemen about an hour to safely remove the kittens, which ended up going back home with the driver — this time tucked inside the passenger compartment of the car.

Link said the call was typical for the department, a task many departments in the area conduct on a daily basis.

When asked about prevention, he said cats will find a warm spot to hide, so there isn’t a way to keep felines from entering a car engine except parking vehicles inside an enclosed garage.
