State College parents charged with endangerment

Couple facing felony count after 5-year-old boy’s fall from ski lift

The parents of a 5-year-old boy who fell off a ski lift in March have been charged with child endangerment.

Micah Mobus Porter, 34, and Maya Meghon Porter, 37, both of State College, were each arraigned Tuesday before Magisterial District Judge Tonya M. Osman on a single felony count of endangering the welfare of children. Micah was released on $50,000 unsecured bail, while Maya was released on $30,000 unsecured bail.

The charges follow a weekslong investigation into the March 1 incident at Blue Knob Ski Resort, where the couple’s 5-year-old son fell from a ski lift chair.

The child was flown via medical helicopter to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Posts on the ski resort’s website after the incident said the boy was not injured in the fall.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the boy was alone on the lift when he turned to adjust his goggles, slid from the lift and fell about 20 feet to the snow-covered ground.

It took resort staff about 15 minutes to find the boy’s parents, the report states.

During the investigation, state police talked to resort staff, who said the boy took the ski lift by himself multiple times that day. Staff said the boy, his brother and father were seen on the same lift chair, but the next time, the boy’s brother and father were on a chair, while the 5-year-old missed that ride. When the operator stopped the lift and asked Micah Porter about the boy, Porter told the operator that the boy was experienced and capable of riding by himself.

In an interview with police on March 16, the boy’s mother said he is a better skier than her, going with his father and brother on more difficult slopes while she skied by herself.

When Micah Porter left the slopes to use the restroom in the lodge, she and the two boys skied down the slope, but when she got to the bottom, the 5-year-old was not there. Soon after, she was told that the boy had fallen.

She said the family skis at Tussey Mountain, too, and have never let the children ride the ski lift there alone, police reported.

When interviewed by police, Micah Porter claimed that was the first time the boy rode the ski lift at Blue Knob by himself. At that point, police explained that the ski lift operator said the boy was seen on the lift several times by himself and that Porter said he was able to ride alone. Porter admitted to police that he did tell the lift operator that the child could ride alone.

The affidavit notes that both parents agreed that a 5-year-old is too young to ride a ski alone. In addition, the report states that the lack of direct supervision led to the boy’s fall.

The Porters’ preliminary hearings are scheduled for May 6 in Bedford County Central Court.
