Preliminary hearing rescheduled for Altoona man accused of shooting to allow for Spanish interpreter

Court requiring in-person Spanish interpreter

The preliminary hearing for a city man accused of opening fire on a vehicle carrying his wife and another man has been rescheduled due to the court’s need for an in-person Spanish interpreter.

Danyi Alberto Gonzalez Morla, 24, is charged with two counts of attempted criminal homicide, along with four counts of aggravated assault and a felony count of firearms not to be possessed without a license.

He’s being held in the Blair County Prison with bail denied.

Because Gonzalez Morla’s first language is Spanish, the court considered inviting a Spanish interpreter to Tuesday’s hearing via telephone call.

Presiding in place of Judge Paula Aigner, District Judge Carmine W. Prestia Jr. said he “doesn’t feel comfortable” using a Spanish interpreter over the phone. Instead, he rescheduled the hearing for May 5 so an interpreter can be present.

Defense attorney Maribeth Schaffer, on behalf of attorney Thomas M. Dickey, objected to the need for an in-person interpreter, stating that an interpreter via telephone call would suffice, but Prestia overruled that objection.

Schaffer also asked for a reasonable bail set for Gonzalez Morla, as he doesn’t have a record, works for a construction crew and has been in the area for two and a half years with his wife.

Considering his wife is a victim in this case, Schaffer said that Gonzalez Morla still has ties to the area.

Assistant District Attorney Dani McCormick said bail was accurately set for Gonzalez Morla.

Prestia said that denying bail is an appropriate ruling, standing by his previous reasoning that Gonzalez Morla is a danger to the community.

He said the court will order an in-person Spanish interpreter for the preliminary hearing set for 9 a.m. May 5.

Gonzalez Morla was arrested April 7 after pursuing the vehicle in which his wife and another man were allegedly engaged in sexual activity. Gonzalez Morla caught up with the vehicle on Charger Highway in Blair Township and fired 11 rounds, with one lodging in his wife’s buttocks.
