Altoona City Council OKs liquor license transfer held by Athenian Cafe
Certification will move to new location of Athenian Cafe
City Council on Monday approved the transfer of a liquor license held by the Athenian Cafe to the restaurant’s new location at the former Altus Brew Pub building, 601 Seventh Ave.
Altus closed in October.
The Athenian moved from its prior location on the 200 block of Union Avenue near Plank Road because it was too small for a bar, and the restaurant needed a bar to take full advantage of its liquor license, according to co-owners Christina and Eva Dees, who are sisters.
The Athenian is a Greek and American restaurant and serves both beer and liquor, the sisters said.
Herman’s Restaurant, formerly located at the Cesare Battisti Club, will be opening at The Athenian’s former spot on Union Avenue on April 23, according to the sisters and Herman’s Facebook page.
It was an intermunicipal transfer, as the Union Avenue location was in Logan Township, and the Seventh Avenue location is in the city.
The Athenian bought the license in 2024 from the owner of The Phoenix restaurant, according to Christina Dees.
He’s happy to see the license back in the city again, said Councilman Bruce Kelley.
