North Woodbury enacts burn ban
Due to dry and windy conditions, North Woodbury Township, Blair County, has issued a burn ban until further notice.
The National Weather Service issued an advisory on the elevated risk of wildfire spread in the region on Monday.
VFW Auxiliary Post 8685 to meet
A VFW Auxiliary Post 8685 member meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at the post.
There will be nomination and election of officers.
The group is also finalizing plans for the annual cancer benefit and dance to be held May 2 at Fort Apache Juniata VFW, 126 N. 16th Ave., Altoona. Dinner will be at 6 p.m., and a dance will be held at 8 p.m. to music by the band Ages. There will be a basket raffle, door prizes, lottery board and a bake sale. Tickets are $12 and are available by calling 814-942-1347.
Baskets and donations are still being accepted from businesses and members.
The dance benefits Altoona Veterans Hospital Cancer Unit & Treatments, PA VFW Aux Cancer Grant Program and VFW Auxiliary Post 8685.
Lottery ticket worth $450K sold
A progressive top prize-winning ticket worth $455,090 for the Cashnado game from the Pennsylvania Lottery was sold at a Lottery retailer in Cambria County on Monday, April 13. Dial Beer Company Inc., 115 Main St., Portage Borough, will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Cashnado is a $30 Fast Play game that offers progressive top prizes starting at $400,000. Fast Play games print on-demand from a Lottery sales terminal or self-service touchscreen vending terminal and are similar to Scratch-Off games, but without the need to scratch a ticket or wait for a drawing.
To see if they’ve won a prize, players can review the ticket, or scan it at a Lottery retailer or with the Ticket Checker feature on the Lottery’s Official App. The holder of a top prize-winning Fast Play ticket should immediately sign the back of the ticket and call the Lottery at 1-800-692-7481.
SCI Benner reports inmate death
SCI Benner Township has reported an inmate death.
According to a news release, 40-year-old inmate Keith Levan died Saturday after being found unresponsive in his cell. Emergency personnel were notified, and life-saving measures were administered by the PA DOC Unit Team and facility medical staff until emergency medical services arrived.
He was pronounced dead by EMS personnel following a consultation with officials at Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Levan was serving a 4- to 10-year sentence for Failure to Comply with Registration of Sexual Offenders Requirements on a Columbia County conviction. He arrived at SCI Benner Township on Feb. 3 from SCI Houtzdale.
In accordance with state policy, the Pennsylvania State Police will conduct an investigation.
Levan’s next-of-kin has been notified.
