Altoona overdose leads to charges of drug delivery resulting in death

Caldwell held on felony count of drug delivery resulting in death

A city man is behind bars unable to post $500,000 bail after being arraigned on charges related to a drug overdose death.

Danny Lee Caldwell Jr., 37, was arraigned July 17 before Magisterial District Judge Matthew Dunio on felony charges of drug delivery resulting in death, criminal use of a communication facility and possession with intent to deliver, along with misdemeanor charges of recklessly endangering another person, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Caldwell is accused of providing the drugs that led to the overdose death of Christy Clifford on April 23.

Police responded to the scene on the 1900 block of 11th Street where a cardiac arrest was reported. Five doses of Narcan were administered by the caller with no effect, court documents state.

Caldwell initially told police that Clifford fell on the floor and became unconscious about 30 minutes before police arrived at 10:01 a.m.

While doing a safety sweep of the apartment, police saw a needle full of a reddish liquid and a blue glassine packet.

Police received a search warrant for the apartment and seized $191 in Clifford’s purse and suspected heroin wrapped in paper, also in the purse. Her cellphone was found on the kitchen floor and Caldwell’s cellphone was found in the bedroom.

Caldwell’s cellphone contained lengthy conversations between Caldwell and Clifford talking about acquiring narcotics, police reported.

During the investigation, police traced the drugs Clifford overdosed on to Caldwell, the report states.

On April 24, police learned that Clifford was in the ICU at UPMC Altoona with an anoxic brain injury. She was pronounced brain dead on April 26, according to the report.

An autopsy conducted by Mount Nittany Medical Center on April 29 listed the cause of death as multidrug overdose due to methamphetamine, fentanyl and xylazine.

When police attempted to interview Caldwell on April 27, he declined.

Caldwell’s preliminary hearing is set for July 30 before Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio.
