Stephen R. Garman
Sept. 13, 1951 – June 18, 2026
Stephen R. Garman, 74, of Williamsburg, passed away Thursday. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Harvey and Helen (Socie) Garman. He married Bonnie Tate in 1976; she preceded him in death in 2025 after sharing 49 years of marriage.
Surviving are a daughter, Christina Miller and husband, Matthew in Virginia, four sisters: Betty (Bernie), Nora (Mike, deceased), Judy (Gordon), and Kathy (Tim); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by four siblings: Harry (Donna), Don (Marie), Roger (Linda, surviving), and Bev (Fred).
Steve graduated from Hollidaysburg High School and afterward began his 38-year career as a carman at Penn Central, eventually retiring from Norfolk Southern. He was a talented welder and painter, but also knew how to have fun at work, as his good friend, Bill Lytle, can attest.
He took up golfing in his forties and became quite good. He enjoyed joining his golf buddies on Thursdays at King Valley Golf Course for the league led by his good friend, Frank O’Dellick. Among his other golf buddies were Ed Showalter, Tom Boob, Steve Bice, Dave Thrower, Bob Coopersmith, and in the early years, Robbie Schellhammer, who passed in 1995. When Steve wasn’t golfing, he and Bonnie were walking their three miles in Martinsburg every day.
Steve will be missed by his family and many friends, which he made wherever he would go, including during his walks in Martinsburg, Thompson Pharmacy, Giant Eagle and Rocky Gap.
All services are private at Sorge Funeral Home & Crematory Inc.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to UPMC Hospice Care and Garvey Manor who took incredible care of Steve during his last weeks.
In lieu of flowers, Steve would want you to play your favorite number on the lottery or you may make memorials to your local public radio or television station.
