Bedford County to kick off events to celebrate America250
County to begin 18-month program celebrating U.S.
Bedford County will kick off an 18-month celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 3, at the Bedford County Courthouse courtyard.
The program, hosted by the Bedford County Committee of America250PA, will launch an initiative to commemorate America’s semiquincentennial through local events, education and engagement.
The day’s events will include remarks by county and state officials, a performance of the National Anthem by Charlotte Raynes, a flag ceremony by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard, invocation and benediction by Pastor Brian Swain, USAF, Ret. of Real Life Church; wreath-laying by the Daughters of the American Revolution, a flag salute by local Boy Scouts and more in recognition of Pennsylvania’s and Bedford County’s roles in American history.
Bedford County President Judge Travis Livengood will read excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, while Perry Picoriello and Gorden Shelp of the Bedford County Players, will read the Gettysburg Address on the anniversary of the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
The committee will also recognize the sponsors of Bedford County’s Liberty Bell, as part of the state’s Bells Across Pennsylvania project within the 250 initiative.
“Bedford County is proud to be part of this once-in-a-generation national milestone,” said Committee Chair Bob Webb. “From our early frontier roots to presidential visits and historic landmarks, our community has played a unique role in shaping the American story. This kickoff begins an exciting journey to honor that legacy.”
The America250PA initiative is Pennsylvania’s official participation in the national semiquincentennial, aiming to highlight the state’s pivotal contributions to the nation’s founding and growth. Bedford County’s celebration continued through Dec. 31, 2026.
Community members, students and visitors are encouraged to attend the kickoff and become part of the celebration. Artist Morgan Young will head a community art project, with all welcome to contribute their own mark to a patriotic canvas that will be available for display throughout the county’s celebrations in the coming months.
