Bedford to host 9/11 event
Former Shanksville fire chief to speak
BEDFORD — Terry Shaffer, who was Shanksville’s fire chief when the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks brought a United Airlines jet in down in the area, will speak at a 9/11 event at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on the steps of the Bedford County Courthouse.
The event is being coordinated with Bedford County Emergency Management as part of the 200-mile Promise Run that began at the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in Washington, D.C., with runners heading to Ground Zero in New York and bicyclists heading to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville.
More than two dozen riders will come to Bedford on Tuesday and spend the night before heading to Shanksville on Wednesday. The Moose Family Center is hosting their stay.
Tuesday’s event will start with music by Route 869 at 7 p.m. Formal ceremonies are to begin at 7:30.
Riders are raising money to aid children of those who have sacrificed for their communities or country.
