New hires and promotions

— Amanda M. Moyer of Altoona has been appointed administrative assistant at Hancock Associates Inc.

Moyer graduated from Altoona Area High School in 2011, and graduated from Penn State Altoona in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in business, with concentration in marketing and management and a minor in entrepreneurship. She was previously employed by Family Services Inc.

— Dr. Christopher Varacallo, a primary care physician specializing in sports medicine, is now associated with University Orthopedics Center.

Varacallo, who treats children and adults for non-surgical orthopedic needs, is accepting new patients at the University Orthopedics office in the Penn Highlands Healthcare facility in DuBois.

— Dr. Leslie Roub, a radiologist, has joined the Tyrone Regional Health Network medical staff. He will provide services in the Tyrone Regional Health Network radiology department.

— Dr. Sean Hampton of Reinhardt Family Practice has joined the Tyrone Regional Health Network Medical staff.

— Dr. Anthony Froncillio of Reinhardt Family Practice has joined the Tyrone Regional Health Network medical staff.

Froncillio provides family medicine services at the Reinhardt Family Practice office located at Pinecroft Medical Center.

— Dr. Mokhtarodin Shakibani, a hospitalist, has joined the UPMC Altoona medical staff.

Shakibani, who received a medical degree from St. George University School of Medicine, Grenada, and completed an internship and residency at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown, specializes in internal medicine and practices with UPMC Altoona Hospitalists, a group specializing in treating patients admitted to the hospital.

— Dianne St. Clair of Coalport was recently promoted to Home Nursing Agency administrative supervisor.

An Agency employee since 2011, St. Clair previously served as office manager for the Bedford and Cambria offices, and then as centralized services/orders department supervisor.

Course completions and certifications

— Michele Azeles, utilization manager for Home Nursing Agency Home Health, and Trisha Myers of Hollidaysburg, director of utilization management and business development for Home Nursing Agency, have successfully completed the Certificate for OASIS Specialist-Clinical exam to be recertified for the COS-C designation.

To achieve the COS-C designation, they had to successfully complete an exam that is the nationally standardized, psychometrically validated test that evaluates a clinician’s knowledge of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services OASIS guidelines.

Conferences and seminars

— David Andrews, managing partner of Andrews and Beard Law Offices in Altoona, was the keynote speaker at a statewide conference of more than 300 school principals in October.

Andrews addressed the Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals at the Penn State Conference Center. He spoke about recent developments in education law.

— Dr. Christopher J. Lincoski, orthopedic hand surgeon with University Orthopedics Center, has recently authored a chapter in the hand surgeons’ medical book titled “PIP Joint Fracture Dislocations: A Clinical Casebook,” chaptered “Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of PIP Fractures and Dislocations.”

The book is being printed and is scheduled to be available in early 2016.

— Anthony Guizio has joined Stiffler McGraw as a senior CAD technician working out of the Hollidaysburg office.

Guizio, who served more than three years in the United States Air Force and comes with 17 years of experience in surveying, highway design and CAD design, will assist with design in land development and transportation and with the survey department.

— Joshua Minor has joined Stiffler McGraw as a technician who will work out of the Hollidaysburg office.

Minor, who holds an associate degree in architectural/civil: CAD design and technology from Penn Highlands Community College, will perform construction inspections for projects. He also will assist with project design.

— James Meikrantz recently joined Stiffler McGraw as a senior technician. Meikrantz, who holds an associate degree in mechanical engineering from Penn State Altoona and comes to the firm with 13 years of experience, will work on construction inspection and assist with project design in the Towanda office.

— Christopher Burkey recently joined Stiffler McGraw as a senior technician. Burkey, who graduated from Greater Johnstown Area Vo-Tech and comes to the firm with more than 26 years of experience, will perform construction inspections for projects out of the Hollidaysburg office.

— Lisa Georgiana has been appointed the inaugural director of the newly created Center for Service & Learning at Saint Francis University, Loretto.

A graduate of Carnegie Mellon with a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in public policy and management, Georgiana began teaching as a part-time marketing instructor at Saint Francis in 2012. She assumed a position in the Campus Ministry Department in the summer of 2013.

— Dr. John Reinhardt of Reinhardt Family Practice has joined the Tyrone Regional Health Network medical staff.

— Tanya McCoy-Caretti of Ebensburg has been promoted to a national client development position with ARCADIS-US.

In her new role, McCoy-Caretti, who has been with ARCADIS for four years as major market manager for Pennsylvania, will lead strategic growth in large urban centers throughout the United States.

— Rhonda Trexler of Martinsburg was recently promoted to Home Nursing Agency clinical manager of staff development/specialty programs. Trexler has been with Home Nursing Agency since 1993 and most recently served as an education and staff development specialist.

Awards and honors

— Leslie Wilson of Hollidaysburg, a clinical nurse specialist for Home Nursing Agency Home Health, has received the Northeast Region Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurses Nurse of Distinction Award in 2015.

To qualify for the award, a nurse must contribute to the WOCN specialty; recognize educational, clinical and research opportunities on WOC nursing practices; and guide in the delivery of expert health care to individuals with WOC issues.

— Theresa Weyant of East Freedom, program coordinator for Home Nursing Agency’s Adult Center for Exceptional Learning, was a recipient of the 2015 UPMC Award for Commitment and Excellence in Service.

Honoring 250 of the more than 60,000 employees throughout UPMC, the award celebrates those whose outstanding achievements support UPMC’s values and reflect high standards of excellence.

— Arlene Craine of Altoona, a customer service representative for Home Health Resource, also was recognized as a recipient of the 2015 UPMC Award for Commitment and Excellence in Service.

Course completions and certifications

— Dr. Donald Betar recently passed the Academy of General Dentistry Fellowship Examination.

This, along with 500 CE credits approved by the Dental Education Council, will enable Betar to be inducted as a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry.

Retirements

— Ann Foust of Altoona recently retired from her role as bereavement secretary for Home Nursing Agency Hospice.

Foust also worked as a hospice office manager and hospice billing clerk in her 26 years of service to the agency.

Miscellaneous

— Pamela Blackmon, associate professor of political science; Todd Davis, professor of English and environmental studies; and Erin Murphy, professor of English, all Penn State Altoona faculty, have received support from the Institute for Arts and Humanities at University Park for 2016-17.

Blackmon will spend the fall 2016 semester as an IAH resident fellow conducting research for her book project “Africa as the ‘Dark Continent’: Tracing the Narrative of Development in the Transition from Agricultural-Based Growth in Ethiopia and Ghana.”

Davis will spend the spring 2017 semester as an IAH resident fellow working on a book of original poems titled “Native Species.” The poems will focus on the ways human activity influences and shapes the natural world.

Murphy received an Individual Faculty Award for the spring 2016 semester. She will conduct research for a book of original poetry based on labor and employment issues.

— Malachi Van Tassell, Saint Francis University president, was one of the leaders featured during the annual College & University Presidents’ Week at Kennedy Catholic High School.

Van Tassell spoke on topics including leadership, academic and career success, personal growth and the importance of service to others.

— Linda DelGrosso of Bellwood has been named a Distinguished Alumni of 2015 by the Mount Aloysius College Alumni Association.

Since the 1970s, DelGrosso has worked in various roles in the DelGrosso family of companies, including manager of the retail store operations at DelGrosso’s Amusement Park during the summer, and in the quality control lab and other operations at DelGrosso Foods.

— April Ressler of Bedford has been re-elected to the board of directors of the Insurance Agents & Brokers of Pennsylvania, a statewide association of independent insurance agents.

Ressler, president of Teeter Group in Altoona, is a graduate of Shippensburg University and holds licenses in property, casualty, life and health insurance.

— Rosemary Pavelko, a resident of Harmony House Manor, Johnstown, has won the Janet Tulloch Memorial Advocacy Award through National Consumer Voice for Quality Long Term Care.

The award honors a citizen, advocate, family care giver or long-term care consumer who has worked directly with and for consumers to improve the lives of individuals in long term care.

Pavelko is a 2015 graduate of the Pennsylvania Empowered Expert Residents through the Cambria County Area Agency on Aging’s Ombudsman Program.

— Peter Kreckel has been named as a Distinguished Alumni by the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy.

Kreckel is an adjunct assistant professor of pharmacology at Saint Francis University and pharmacy manager of Thompson Pharmacy, Broad Avenue in Altoona. Prior to his current roles, he spent 26 years working for the independent chain Kopp Drug.

Conferences and seminars

— Dr. Erin Kenny had a poster – comparing two patients with enhanced S-Cone Syndrome in Presentation and Case Management – accepted at the American Optometry Academy in New Orleans.

Kenny, the daughter of John and Roberta Kenny of Altoona, is a resident in Low Vision and Rehabilitation at the Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center at The Eye Institute, Philadelphia.

Retirements

— Jane Miller of Tyrone recently retired as executive assistant for administration at Home Nursing Agency.

She joined Home Nursing Agency in 1986 as an administrative assistant and was later promoted to the role of executive assistant for the agency.

— William Roberson of Altoona recently retired from his role of program coordinator at Home Nursing Agency’s Adult Center for Exceptional Learning.

With 17 years of service, Roberson formerly worked as a van driver for Home Health Resource.

Miscellaneous

— Bill Strosnider, associate professor of environmental engineering at Saint Francis University, recently led a group of four volunteers from the engineering firm BioMost Inc. to complete preliminary design work on a water treatment project in Potosi, Bolivia.

The project aims to treat contaminated mine waters so that they can be safely used for much-needed irrigation in the impoverished farming communities downstream.

Dr. Anthony Maniglia of UPMC Altoona Blair Medical Associates is the recipient of the Clinical Practice Award winner for the western Pennsylvania American College of Physicians.

The award is given to a physician who has demonstrated outstanding clinical skills in the practice of internal medicine and its subspecialties.

C. David Kimmel of Altoona will receive the 2015 Outstanding Fundraising Professional Award from the Allegheny Mountains Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Currently employed as associate director for alumni relations and stewardship at Penn State Altoona, Kimmel had previously served as the college’s first director of university relations.

Course completions and certifications

Louis C. Schmitt, founder and principal of ADR Solutions and the Center for Divorce & Dispute Resolution in Duncansville, has been approved as a Public Arbitrator by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. As a Public Arbitrator, Schmitt will decide cases involving securities and business disputes among investors, brokerage firms and individual brokers.

Conferences and seminars

Randy Hudson, a partner in Hayes Large Architects’ Altoona office, spoke at the Pennsylvania Library Association’s annual conference.

The topic, “Your Vital Library,” addressed best practices in library programs and design.

Retirements

Delores Cree recently retired as administrative assistant-associate for Home Nursing Agency Home Health in Blair County after 21 years of service.

Lou Ann Grove of Williamsburg recently retired as director of clinical records and centralized services for Home Nursing Agency.

Having celebrated 40 years of service to Home Nursing Agency, Grove began as a home health secretary and also worked as an executive secretary and as a clinical records supervisor.

Debra Helsel of Roaring Spring recently retired as office manager for the Home Nursing Agency Home Health and Hospice office in Blair County.

Helsel joined Home Nursing Agency in 2004 as an administrative assistant and was later promoted to office manager.

Diana Horten of Cresson recently retired as the mobile psych nurse for Home Nursing Agency at the Adult Community Health Center in Altoona.

Horten joined Home Nursing Agency in 1997 as a home health nurse in Cambria County and later moved into her recent role as a mobile psych nurse.

Donna McBurney of Altoona recently retired from her role as administrative assistant-associate for Home Nursing Agency Home Health in Blair County.

Recently marking 20 years of service, McBurney joined Home Nursing Agency as a secretary for the private duty program and operational support.

— Brian Rutter of Boalsburg has joined South Hills School of Business & Technology as director of admissions.

Rutter, who most recently served as vice president of operations for Greenway Logistics, doing business as ICAT Logistics of State College, will be responsible for all aspects of student enrollment, admissions processes and policies for the school’s three locations.

— Scott Rhine of Altoona was promoted to vice president of PK Management LLC, the nation’s third largest affordable housing management company.

PK Management owns and operates about 150 properties in 25 states, including Logan Hills Apartments in Altoona and Spring Manor Apartments in Hollidaysburg.

— Katelyn Cordido Reese, a native of Cresson and a graduate of Penn Cambria High School, recently became an agent for New York Life.

Reese earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in instructional studies in May from Point Park University in Pittsburgh.

She is the daughter of Gregory and Melissa Reese of Cresson.

— Tina Kunstbeck has joined Curry Supply as Wellness Life Coach.

Her responsibilities in this newly created position will be to help employees make better health choices that fit their lifestyle, help motivate them to get to their physical and emotional health goals, and to be available for questions and guidance.

Awards and honors

— Ann M. Benzel has received the 2015 Honorary Alumni Award from the Mount Aloysius College Alumni Association.

Benzel, who serves as secretary of the board of trustees at the college, is the president of Benzel’s Bretzel Bakery Inc., a fourth-generation family-operated business, serving the public since 1911.

She was recognized for her community service, support and loyalty to Mount Aloysius College, as well as to many cultural and civic organizations throughout Pennsylvania and the southern Allegheny Mountains.

— Matthew Stich of Bellwood submitted a photograph that won critics’ choice in the Black & White category of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation’s Parks & Forests Through the Seasons 2015 Photo Contest.

The winning photograph features canoeists at Canoe Creek State Park.

Course completions and certifications

— Thomas D. McCaffrey, a special education teacher with the Hollidaysburg Area School District, has been named a board certified behavior analyst by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.

McCaffrey previously received a behavior specialist license from the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine.
