Altoona library announces December programs

– Our third annual 12 Days of Ornaments started on Dec. 1 at the Altoona Area Public Library. Pick up your ornament making kit on the days listed below, while supplies last. These kits are free for our adult patrons with your Blair County library card. Limit one kit per library card.

– Dec. 6: Snowmen Melting

– Folklore: Have Yourself a Scary Little Christmas with Michael Allison in the library theater at 2 p.m. Dec. 6. Allison examines the European folklore surrounding the Winter Solstice and the Christmastime holidays. This is a free adult program. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 125 to register.

– Super Saturday: Yarn Wreath Ornaments — 10 a.m. Dec. 6 — Children ages 5-12 are welcome to join us at the AAPL as we create and decorate miniature wreaths out of yarn to hang on your tree, mantle or refrigerator. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register.

– Come join the Kneedle Knerds United for a Fiber Fun Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 6. Bring your favorite fiber crafts. Experienced crafters may be available to help you get started. This is a free adult program. No registration required.

– LEGO Club: 6 p.m. Dec. 8 and 11 — Unleash your creativity with LEGO club. This program is geared towards children ages 4 and up. Monthly registration and a library card is required. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to sign up.

– Paws 4 Reading: 5 p.m. Dec. 8 — This heartwarming program partners the library’s youth room with the local humane society to create a paw-some reading adventure. Kids practice reading aloud to furry friends, boosting their confidence and literacy skills while giving adoptable pets some much-needed love and attention. – Puzzle Swap: 5 p.m. Dec. 9 — All ages are welcome to the Friends of the AAPL Puzzle Swap. Bring a gently used puzzle with all the pieces and swap it with someone else — now you have a new-to-you puzzle to enjoy with family and friends. Please bring only puzzles you are willing to part with for life. No registration necessary.

– Teen DIY Zen Garden: 3 p.m. Dec. 10 — Teens ages 12-18 are invited to join us at the AAPL to make their own zen garden with decorations to reflect on these chilly months to come. This is a free program. Register by calling 814-946-0417 ext. 125.

– Homeschool Hub: Fantastic Bioplastics — 1 p.m. Dec. 11 — Ever feel like you are living in a paradise of plastic? Join us at the AAPL as we explore what makes this ubiquitous substance so durable, learn the difference between a bioplastic and its more traditional cousins and even make some bioplastic of our own. – Blair/Clearfield County Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired presents Reckless Returns Eye Safety 101 at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Dec. 12. This free program includes vision screening for children ages 2-6. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register.

– Folded Book Art Christmas Trees: 10:30 a.m. Dec. 13 — Get ready to turn an ordinary book into a Christmas tree. In this hands-on craft program, kids ages 6-12 will learn the art of book folding, the creative way to recycle old books into adorable 3D sculptures. With simple folds, each child will transform pages into a Christmas tree just in time for the holiday. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register.

– The annual holiday wreath program with the Blair Conservation District is back again. Join us at the library at 2 p.m. Dec. 13 to make your own holiday wreath. The cost is $25 or save $5 off if you bring the frame from last year. Prepay by Wednesday, Dec. 10, to confirm your registration. Please bring your own gloves, scissors and gardening shears. – Super Silly Stories: 10:30 a.m. Dec. 16 and 18 — Preschoolers ages 3 and up and caregivers are invited to enjoy some Super Silly Stories at the library. This program is free and registration is required. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register.

– Marvelous Machines: Speedy Sleigh Scramble — 3:30 p.m. Dec. 16 — Join us at the AAPL as we slip and slide with our next simple machine: the sleigh! Find out just why this souped-up sled became a staple of transportation for so long and let your creativity run wild as you create your own! This program is for grades 1-5. – Teen Painted Wooden Ornaments: 3 p.m. Dec. 17 — Join us after school to transform plain wooden ornaments into works of art. All materials will be provided. Ages 12-18. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 125 to register.

– At 11 a.m. Dec. 20, join us at our Memory Cafe for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. You will find a safe and welcoming environment where forming friendships and connections for both the loved ones and caregivers are encouraged. Memory Cafe reduces the stigma and isolation that comes with living with dementia and promotes the well-being of everyone that attends. So join us in the library boardroom, where you can socialize while participating in planned activities designed to strengthen cognitive skills while having fun. Please note, this is not a support group or day service; all caregivers are still required to attend with their loved ones. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 125 to register.

– AAPL Shelf Indulgence Adult Book Club will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 27. This is a BYOM (bring your own mug) with a choice of coffee or tea. This month’s book is “Anxious People” by Fredrik Backman. Register by calling 814-946-0417 ext. 125.

– Mahjong Club meets Thursdays in the library from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All adult patrons are welcome to come in to play. No registration required.

– Chess Club meets Thursdays from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to come in on Thursday nights to play chess. Meet at the front tables on the first floor. No registration necessary. Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by their legal guardian.

– Story Times: Families of young children are invited to check out the Altoona Area Public Library’s free educational story time programs for caregiver and child to enjoy together. Developmentally appropriate and enjoyable programs for children ages 1-6 are offered weekly. Please call the library at 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register.

– Mother Goose (ages 12-24 months): Mondays, Dec. 1, 8 at 9:30 a.m. and Thursdays, Dec. 4, 11 at 9:30 a.m.

– Toddler Time (ages 2-3): Dec. 2, 9 at 9:30 a.m. or Dec. 3, 10 at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

– Preschool Explorers (ages 3-6): Tuesdays, Dec. 2, 9 at 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays, Dec. 4, 11 at 10:30 a.m.
