Altoona library sets programs for August

— Friends of the Library Fall Mums Sale is back. Purchase a voucher at the library’s Adult Circulation Desk to redeem at Brubaker’s Greenhouse, Martinsburg. Each $10 voucher gets you a 9″ potted mom. Vouchers are available for purchase now through Sept. 12.
— Come join the Kneedle Knerds United for a Fiber Fun Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. Bring your favorite fiber crafts. Experienced crafters may be available to help you get started. This is a free adult program. No registration required.
— Paint Space will be held at 1:30 p.m.. Saturday, Aug. 2, for teens and adults. Participants will be given a beginner-level subject to paint while following along with a YouTube video. All supplies are provided and participants can take their work home at the end of the class. The class is for ages 13 and up and the cost is $10 due by July 31. All skill levels are welcome. — Sample Food through the Ages at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, in the library board room. Experience a historical presentation on the food topic for the month. Samples and recipes will be given out at the end of the program. This month’s topic is the History of Tea. Come enjoy a tea blend known to our early ancestors. — In partnership with the Video Game Clubs of America, the library will host a gaming club from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 26. From tabletop boardgames, card games, Nintendo Switch and more, each week will be something different. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
— Chess Club will meet from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. All are welcome. Meet at the rear tables on the first floor. No registration necessary. Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by their legal guardian.
— Beginner Sewing Machine Skills for Adults will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. Learn the basics of using a sewing machine and create a small take-home project. — Oh no! We’ve gotten stuck in the 90’s, how will we ever get back? Wrap up your summer fun with an Escape Room at the library. To be held from Aug. 11 to 16, hours will vary each day. — Paws 4 Reading will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11. Kids practice reading aloud to furry friends, boosting their confidence and literacy skills while giving adoptable pets from the local humane society some much-needed love and attention. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 123, to register.
— Calling all architects ages 4-12. Are you ready to contribute your skills to the construction of the ultimate LEGO city? Join us at the AAPL as we build an entire city for the display cases. Construction will take place over multiple sessions (Aug. 11, 14, 18, 21, 25 and 28) from 6 to 7 p.m., and participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as they please. — Friendship Bracelet Making for Teens will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14. Materials will be provided to make a variety of friendship bracelets. Program is for teen patrons, ages 12-18. Register by calling 814-946-0417, ext. 125.

— Crafternoon Bee Balm Bash will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in the library board room. Create your very own beeswax balm, great for dry cracked fingers. Then once you are finished, show off your creativity in the black and yellow paint challenge. Paint your very best using only black and yellow paint. All supplies will be provided. — Focused on Foundations will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22. This free Developmental Playgroup is designed to help parents and their children 3 and younger work together to meet the child’s developmental goals. The playgroup is facilitated by an early childhood specialist and designed to provide fun activities to promote each child’s language, problem-solving, motor skills and social interactions.
