Hollidaysburg library sets programs, activities for Sept.
HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library has announced its activities for September.
The library will be closed
Sept. 2, 3 and 4 for the Labor Day holiday weekend. The library also will be closed Friday,
Sept. 8, for a staff in-service day.
n Canasta and Mah Jongg games are held at 11 a.m. Mondays. Beginners are welcome.
n Lego Club will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, and 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fridays. Bring your imagination, and the library will supply the Legos.Intended for children ages 5-12.
n Needlework & Arts Group is held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Bring your own materials and projects for this crafting club intended for adults.
n Storytime and Craft will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. Stories, songs, shaky eggs, bubbles and a craft. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver.
n We Build Wednesdays are held all day Wednesdays in the Children’s Room. Come build, create and design. A different hands-on STEM activity will be available all day.
n Twisted Stitchers meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. Bring your own project, yarn and hooks; spend time with other crafters.
n History Hour will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7. Park Ranger James Effinger will give a presentation on the history of Canoe Creek State Park. Lots of interesting facts and trivia about the park will be discussed.
n Dance, Sing and Play! will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 7, 21 and 28. Dance, sing, shake the parachute and some shaky eggs too.
n Paws to Read will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. Meet and read to pets from the Central PA Humane Society. Children ages 5 and older are welcome with their caregivers.
n “Modern Western Civilization (1500-Present) From Dawn, to Decadence, to Disillusionment,” an eight-part lecture series at the library, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month from September through April.
John Eicher, associate professor of history and current U.S. National Endowment for Humanities Fellow, will offer an eight-part lecture series on the history of Western civilization from the Renaissance to the present.
The first lecture on Sept. 13 is titled “What Physics Do You Believe In? The Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Rise of the Scientific Worldview.”
The individual sessions can stand alone as a captivating experience; the attendance of as many of the eight lectures as possible is encouraged to gain the full perspective and historical details as provided.
n “Craveable Creations: Foods Around the World” will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14.
Learn knife skills, kitchen safety and cooking techniques with 4-H and Penn State Nutrition Links Educator Jessie Kestor.
There is a $5 participation fee, or included in membership fee if you are a 4-H member. Registration is required. Stop by, call the library or email pennie

n Inspirational Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14. This month’s book selection is “If I Run” by Terri Blackstock. All are welcome.
n Women Writers Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20. The group will discuss “Mexican Gothic” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. No signup is necessary.
n Best of Times Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28. The group will discuss “The Rabbit Hutch” by Tess Gunty. All are welcome.
n Hollidaysburg Heritage Guided Tours will be held at 12:15 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 16 and 30, Oct. 7 and 21 and Nov. 4. There are three tours offered each date, with an option for brunch at the U.S. Hotel. Go to www.hollidaysburglibrary.org or www.HHGTours.org for more information.
