Altoona library sets June activities

n The library will bring the 2026 Air Weaver Big Balloon Show to Altoona at 6 p.m. June 12 at the Altoona Area High School auditorium, 1415 Sixth Ave. This free show combines balloons, magic and silliness to create a tone-of-a-kind experience that will delight children and adults alike. All ages are welcome. All you need is a Blair County Library Card to attend (at least one card per family). Call the library to get your free library card at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
n In partnership with the Video Game Clubs of America, the library will host a gaming club from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, June 9, 16, 23 and 30. From tabletop board games, card games, Nintendo Switch and more, each week will be something different for you to enjoy with your friends. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
n Pinochle Club meets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays in the library. All adult patrons are welcome to come in to play. No registration required.
n Mahjong Club meets from 11 a.m.. to 2 p.m. Thursdays in the library. All adult patrons are welcome to come in to play. No registration required.
n Chess Clubmeets from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. All are welcome. Meet at the rear tables on the first floor. No registration necessary. Anyone under the age of 16 need to be accompanied by their legal guardian.
n The Friends of the AAPL Puzzle Swap will be held at 5 p.m. June 9. Bring a gently used puzzle (with all pieces) and “swap” it with someone else’s puzzle
n “Popular Slang Through the Decades” will be hld at 6 p.m. June 15. Learn about popular slang throughout the decades. This program is for ages 18 and older and registration is preferred. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
n Dino Perler Beads for Teens will be held at 3 p.m. June 17. Teens will be making dinosaur shaped creations out of perler beads. This is a free program. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
n Friends of the Library will hold Game Night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 18 in the Library Board Room. No registration is required. It is for ages 12 and older.
n “Iron, Steam and a Forgotten Legacy: Blair County During the Civil War” will be held at 6 p.m. June 18 in the Library Theater. The program will be presented by Dustin Smith, executive director of Baker Mansion History Museum and Blair County Historical Society. No registration required.
n Make your own Patriotic Star Wall Hanging at 6 p.m. June 29 in the library. All materials will be provided. This is an adult-only program. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125, to register.
n The Friends of the Library will host its monthly book club at
10 a.m. June 20 in the library board room. The book for the month is “We’ll Prescribe You a Cat” by Syou Ishida. RSVP by email to SarahAAPL@yahoo.com. If you are not yet a Friends member, forms can be found on the library website. Memberships are $10 per year.

n Pokemon TCG for Teens will be held at 3 p.m. June 24. Start your own pokemon tcg journey at the library. Learn strategy, game sense and deck building all while taking yourself to victory. Starter decks will be available to borrow, and instruction provided. No registration required just show up and play.
n AAPL Shelf Indulgence Adult Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. June 27. This is a BYOM (bring your own mug) with a choice of coffee or tea. The book for this month is “Three Days in June” by Anne Tyler. Register by calling 814-946-0417, ext. 125.

History Makers STEM Adventures — Starting on June 18, every Thursday at 3 p.m. will embark on a hands‒on STEM adventure inspired by the innovators and cultures of the past. Through experiments, building challenges and creative exploration, children will discover how people throughout history solved problems and how you can too. This is for ages 5-12. Messes Through the Ages — Starting on Friday, June 26, at 10 a.m., children ages 3 and younger are invited to explore history with some messy, hands-on sensory play. A change of clothes is suggested.
