Local Scouts attend Spring Camporee in Tyrone

Local Scouts attend Spring Camporee in Tyrone The Chief Logan District, Juniata Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America held their annual Spring Camporee May 1 and 2 at Camp Anderson, Tyrone. The event was held with COVID guidelines in place and included scouts from Blair and Cambria counties who participated in a First Aid Meet on Saturday morning. Fifty-eight scouts and approximately 40 leaders and staff participated in the event. Friday night tent camping was canceled due to the high wind warnings, but participants were able to camp on Saturday night. Saturday activities included the First Aid Meet in the morning, followed by an Order of the Arrow Call Out, fun activities in the afternoon and a campfire in the evening. Saturday evening concluded with a Camp Anderson tradition with Chip Dillon playing “Taps” on his bugle. On Sunday, a nondenominational church service was held and camp was dismissed. The scouts and leaders want to thank Camp Anderson for hosting the event, staffing a trading post and even providing firewood for the camp-wide campfire. They would also like to thank Smith Trucking for permitting the use of part of its parking lot for off-site COVID pre-screening. During the First Aid Meet, patrols from each troop were challenged with five first aid-related questions and were evaluated on how well they knew what to do when presented with the challenges. Troop 20 from Tyrone placed first in the competition, with Troop 103, also from Tyrone, earning second place and Troop 2221 from Ashville coming in third. All units were recognized for their participation. The Chief Logan District would like to thank Brian, Sherri and Tyler Parshall for chairing the event, as well as all scouts and leaders for attending and participating in the event. Anyone interested in joining scouting should contact Brennan Malenovitch, district executive, at 717-667-9236 or go to Beascout.org for more information about finding a scout unit near you.
