Christmas music available

Christmas music is available at the Sacred Music Library in the First Presbyterian Church, corner of Walnut and Clark streets, Hollidaysburg. The library will be open from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday; 1 to 4 p.m. Monday; and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 8. The library will close on Dec. 10 and reopen in February 2019.

Aglow to meet

Altoona Aglow will hold a Christmas party at 10 a.m. Dec. 8 at Perkins Restaurant, Plank Road, Altoona. The party will be in the banquet room and will be followed by lunch, at which time attendees can order lunch on their own off the menu.

Community meal

The Faith Baptist Cafe will serve the monthly Community Meal from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Faith Baptist Church, 315 40th St., in the Highland Park section of Altoona. The menu includes salisbury steak, scalloped potatoes, vegetables, roll and dessert.

Contact the church office at 944-2894 before 3 p.m. today if transportation is needed.


– 3 FOUR ONE will present an inspirational morning of contemporary Christmas music at 10:40 a.m. Dec. 9 at the Hollidaysburg Christian Missionary Alliance Church. The trio features Julie Gicking Hanlon, Lisa Surkovich and Rebecca Culp and is based in Hollidaysburg. In addition to traditional Christmas music, the trio will perform music written by the group.

– Big Brass Yuletide Blast will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the First United Presbyterian Church of Hollidaysburg, 601 Walnut Street. Admission is free and everyone is invited.

– Chiz Rider will present a free concert at Altoona Bible Church, 3017 Union Ave., Altoona, at 7 p.m. Saturday.

– The Valley Voices annual Christmas concert will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 9 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. Front St., Philipsburg.

Bruce Trinkley, Professor Emeritus of Music at Penn State University will serve as guest conductor. He will conduct the chorus in the singing of his original arrangement of the beloved Christmas Carol “Away in a Manger.”

In lieu of the price of a ticket, those attending the concert are asked to bring non-perishable food items which will be given to the four food banks in the area where singers reside. These are Philipsburg, West Branch, Osceola and Moshannon Valley. Any monetary donation received will be used by the food banks to purchase meat vouchers.

– Re-Creation, the full performance singing and dancing group from Port Trevorton, will present “A Classic Christmas!” at 7 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, 801 Allegheny St., Hollidaysburg.

This year’s program captures the excitement of the season with traditional hymns, audience sing-a-longs, classic carols and spirited settings of all-new songs.

There is no admission charge; an offering will be received to support Re-Creation’s ministry to hospitalized veterans.

Gift bazaar

Alternative Christmas Gift Bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Stone Church of the Brethren, 1623 Moore Street, Huntingdon.

A large selection of SERRV products, hand crafted items, homemade scones, soups and bread will be available for purchase. There will be free beverages and music during the event.

Christmas Extravaganza

The fifth annual Christmas Extravaganza will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Warriors Mark United Methodist Church, 1840 Centre Line Road, Warriors Mark.

A pancake breakfast, which includes pancakes, sausage, milk and juice, will be available from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children under 10.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for pictures from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Huntingdon County Pop-up Library will be on site with activities and crafts for children. Vendors will be on hand and lunch will be available. There will also be funnel cakes and homemade pies for sale. The church is handicapped accessible.

Hanging of the Greens

Juniata United Methodist Church, 808 N. Fourth St., Altoona, will hold a Hanging of the Greens service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. The public is welcome to celebrate the first Sunday of Advent and experience the tradition of preparing for the Christmas season.
