Feeling unappreciated by rest of family during Christmastime

Dear Annie: My husband and I are in our 70s, and although our adult children live nearby, they rarely visit us. It is always considered “more convenient” for us to go to them. For years, I decorated our home from top to bottom for Christmas. I loved the tree, the lights and the feeling that I was creating something special for our family. But now I find myself wondering why I bother. On Christmas Eve, we may see one of our children’s families for three hours. Half the time, the adults fall asleep on the couch. Then they are well rested and ready to celebrate with the other ...

Horoscope: Tuesday, June 30

The effort has already been made; now comes the season of recognition. Aries (March 21-April 19) You give in ways both visible and invisible. The invisible ways often take more effort. It’s normal to want to be seen and appreciated for those efforts. Mercury retrograde asks: Who takes care of whom? Is the arrangement fair? Taurus (April 20-May 20) Not everything is part of a pattern, but many things are, and that’s why you’re constantly noticing, searching for meaning and predicting outcomes. Mercury retrograde asks: How can I learn from the past? Why am I remembering this ...

Political rhetoric meets reality

One of the dangers of war is that political rhetoric often collides with strategic reality. President Donald Trump spent years vehemently criticizing former President Barack Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, arguing that it failed to permanently halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions while providing the regime with economic relief and resources that strengthened its position throughout the Middle East. He called it one of the worst foreign policy agreements in modern American history. Millions of Americans agreed with him. The criticism was straightforward. Iran, many argued, received billions ...

Campus chants to synagogue attacks

Politicians, progressives and students revel in accusations that Israel is “genocidal” and “settler colonial.” Those accusations are ahistorical and false, yet they fan the flames of antisemitism. When students march chanting from “the river to the sea, Palestine shall be free,” they are — whether they know it or not — calling for the elimination of Israel. Only 18% of the original 1920 mandate for Palestine became Israel, the world’s only Jewish state. Most of the rest became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan where Islam is the state religion, as it is in over two ...

General Time is undefeated in battle

I am on a mudslide toward death. Well, we all are, really, when you think about it, but sometimes it just seems you’re slipping down the side of the mountain faster than at other times. Like, for example, when you’re approaching a birthday that starts with a “fif” and ends with crying in the car because the clouds are moving too quickly overhead. It’s not as silly as it sounds — though it is, admittedly, fairly silly. I had dropped off the kids at camp and was driving back to the house when I got to a stoplight. I looked up and saw shocking blue, scattered white puffballs ...

Trusting in God to supply all we need

As I have begun my summer three-mile power-walking workouts on a commercial street in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, where I pass a Waffle House and a Tim Hortons, I noticed two large billboard signs taking aim at President Donald Trump and the economy. One sign is asking why our vacations are so expensive this year. The other asks why grocery prices are so high. These questions are aimed at the mostly working-class population in this area that lives in nearby apartment complexes, and it’s pretty obvious that the sponsors of these messages are not Trump supporters. I think one point of ...
