Disinformation videos malign candidates
Social media videos believed to be linked to Russia are misusing real people's names and photographs to spread disinformation about two Democratic Senate candidates.
One target is Sherrod Brown, running against Republican Sen. Jon Husted in Ohio. The video, which appears to include AI manipulation, falsely attributes claims to Haya Akbik, a former intern of Brown. She said the claims are "completely made up" and demonstrate the need for Congress to regulate artificial intelligence. Another target is James Talarico, running against Republican Ken Paxton in Texas. His spokesperson said the videos use AI deepfakes.
Broadcom, other AI stocks lift Wall Street
AI stocks led Wall Street higher. The S&P 500 rose 0.6% Tuesday. The Nasdaq composite rose 1.2%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up by less than 0.1%.
The majority of stocks within the S&P 500 fell, but gains for Broadcom and other influential stocks in the artificial-intelligence industry made up for them. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market a day before the Federal Reserve will announce a decision on interest rates.
Global cyberscams bilk Americans out of billions
A U.S. congressional investigation has found that the U.S. government's response to surging cyberscams remains fragmented and leaves victims struggling to recover losses.
The report from the Democratic leadership of the Joint Economic Committee released Tuesday found that federal agencies lack a unified accounting of money seized from overseas scam compounds or returned to victims. Americans reported nearly $18 billion in cyberfraud losses to the FBI last year. That far exceeds reported recoveries.
ByteDance founder takes top of China's rich list
ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming has reclaimed the top spot on a list of China's richest people, driven by his company's push into artificial intelligence. That's according to the annual rankings by The Hurun Research Institute released Tuesday.
Its list reflects that the country's high-tech sectors were rising, but others like consumer and real estate were under pressure. Zhang topped the list with $100 billion, up 43%. Bottled water magnate Zhong Shanshan fell to second place with $61 billion.
German court rejects bid to end pipeline blast trial
A German court has rejected a defense request to end the trial of a former Ukrainian army officer who is accused of damaging the Nord Stream gas pipelines built to carry Russian gas to Western Europe in blasts four years ago.
The suspect went on trial in Hamburg on Oct. 14. He is alleged to have been the ringleader of the attack on the Nord Stream gas pipelines. It was considered to be one of Europe's biggest acts of sabotage since World War II.
EPA watchdog to probe derailment response
The Environmental Protection Agency's response to the disastrous 2023 East Palestine train derailment will be investigated after dozens of residents of the small town on the Ohio-Pennsylvania and Vice President JD Vance requested the review.
The Inspector General of the EPA announced the investigation Tuesday to assess the agency's response to the worst rail disaster in more than a decade. Resident Jami Wallace said she is glad the concerns raised by people who live in the area are getting attention again. She has tracked more than 80 cases of cancer among residents.
