Mason Campagna’s big second-half carries Claysburg-Kimmel against West Branch

CLAYSBURG -- West Branch held Claysburg-Kimmel's dual-threat QB Mason Campagna to just 17 yards rushing in the first half Friday night. His most successful run was on a 6-yard touchdown that gave Claysburg a 13-7 halftime lead.
Locker room adjustments to the blocking scheme worked like a charm.
The senior signal caller ripped off big chunks of yard after the break, helping Claysburg keep West Branch at bay in a 45-28 win at Bulldog Stadium.
"We started going toward different holes and actually changing some of our blocking schemes, and in the second half, I was able to break off some big runs from those changes," Campagna said.
Players of the game: Campagna finished with 145 yards rushing, including a 32-yard TD run on the opening drive of the second half. He also completed 12-of-17 passes for 210 yards and two scores. Gavin Treon caught both touchdown passes, snagging five balls in all for 107 yards.
Claysburg coach Chuck Kassick: "We figured them out up front. They were doing some different things than they showed on tape, and they played hard. They were beating us off the ball. We made some adjustments at halftime. Our kids executed and did a great job."
Plays of the game: On the Bulldogs first offensive play, Campagna hit Treon in stride behind the defense downfield for a 52-yard score and a quick 7-0 lead. In the third quarter, Remington Diehl caught a pass over the middle, bounced off a tackler, spun away from another one before dragging yet another into the end zone for a 24-yard score.
Unsung hero(es): Defensive lineman Landon Woods and linebacker Collton Replogle combined on numerous tackles to help slow down the West Branch interior run game.
"Replogle actually moved from the line last week to linebacker due to injury. They both do an excellent job against the run. They're good to have and fun to watch," Cassick said.
Most vital statistic(s): Not so much a statistic, but West Branch missed several opportunities at long touchdowns in the passing game early and had a potential pick six dropped late, trailing just 31-28 at that point.
West Branch coach Travis McDowell: "We missed chances. We had a dropped touchdown early and a dropped interception late. That could have definitely made a big difference in the game."
