Shackley has strong outing at ACC swim meet

Former Blair Regional YMCA and Bedford High School swimmer Leah Shackley, a freshman at North Carolina State University, excelled at her first Atlantic Coast Conference championship meet, leading the lady Wolfpack with 54 points this past week.

Shackley’s top finish was in the 200 backstroke, finishing second with a time of 1:48.73. Virginia’s Claire Curzan won in 1:47.38.

Shackley also swam in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.37, earning a bronze medal just behind Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh and Cal’s Mary Ambre Moluh. Both Walsh and Moluh competed in this past year’s Olympic games. Walsh for the United States and Moluh for France.

Shackley also placed fourth in the 100 butterfly and earned three additional bronze medals in the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 400 freestyle relay. She qualified for the NCAA Division I national championships on March 19-22.

Lopez receives honor

Penn State Altoona freshman Gabriel Lopez was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Week in men’s tennis.

Lopez helped lead his team to victory at Saint Vincent College. The freshman recorded wins in both doubles and singles play.

Lopez is 4-1 in doubles matches this season, and he leads the team in doubles wins. In singles, the freshman is 1-1.

More honors for Kling

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State University baseball player Paxton Kling was selected National Player of the Week by Perfect Game. The Central grad batted 7-of-13 (.538) with four homers, a double, six RBI and seven runs, while adding two hit-by-pitches and two steals. He notched a 1.538 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage in three wins.
