50 years ago: Jan. 5, 1974

Frank S. Smith retired as president of the First National Bank of Altoona after 49 years of service but was to remain chairman of the board. He graduated from Girard College in 1925 and started as a bank messenger. He was active in the Altoona Enterprise's Jobs for Joes program.

25 years ago: Jan. 5, 1999

Sgt. Arthur L. Hershey, 51, of the Pennsylvania State Police in Bedford, who once served in the Hollidaysburg barracks, was killed when he was hit by a pickup truck. He had founded the Camp Cadet Program for fatherless youngsters and led an investigation into missing drugs from the Altoona Police evidence room.

10 years ago: Jan. 5, 2014

State Rep. John McGinnis, R-Altoona, and several other legislators announced a town hall meeting on health care access and choice at the Penn State Devorris Downtown Center in Altoona. They had proposed a new access law when UPMC chose not to renew its contract with Highmark Insurance.
