Tigers tennis wins LHAC again

BEDFORD -- For the fourth year in a row, the Hollidaysburg Area High School girls tennis team played Bedford for the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference championship. They played it on Monday afternoon, and just like the three previous times, the Lady Tigers came out on top.

Hollidaysburg improved its record to 19-0, beating Bedford 5-0 to claim another crown.

"Bedford always has a quality team," Lady Tigers coach Brian Denis said. "And we have enjoyed the opportunit to play them the last four years in a big-match setting. I thought we played very efficient and smart tennis and took care of business."

In singles play, Hollidaysburg's Grace Muriceak defeated Taylor Ruhlman, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Crosby Denis defeated Samantha Ednie, 6-1, 6-0. Emma Moritz finished up singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Nevaeh Lohr.

"I was a little concerned we would be looking too far ahead (to the state playoff match) but we were extremely focused. It was nice to send our seniors out as four-time Laurel Highlands champions," Coach Denis said.

In doubles play, Hollidaysburg's Taylor Eardley and Rina Stiffler downed McKenzie Clapper and Addie Shaffer, 6-1, 6-3. Olivia Panaro and Brooklyn Klingner closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Eden Becker and Jackie Heeter.

The Lady Tigers will play North Allegheny today in the first round of the PIAA Tournament.

"Looking at their lineup, they will be an improved team from the team that we defeated last year to make it to the Final 8 in the state," Coach Denis said. "We will give 110 percent effort and show that we can be recognized with a school that big as one of the best teams in the state."
