Military plane crashes, killing 8 troops

HAVANA, Cuba -- A Cuban military plane crashed into a hillside Saturday morning in the western province of Artemisa, killing eight troops on board, the government said.

Cuba's military said the Soviet-made AN-26 took off from the Playa Baracoa airport outside Havana at 6:38 a.m. and crashed outside the town of Candelaria about 40 miles away.

Pentagon: Blast kills US service member

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A U.S. service member in Iraq was killed Saturday by an explosive device outside Mosul, according to a statement released by the Pentagon.

The Pentagon said the service member died from wounds sustained in an "explosive device blast," stating further information would be released as appropriate.

Saturday's incident marks the second American military fatality since the start of the Mosul operation against the Islamic State group more than six months ago.

Syria government repels IS attack

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Syria's military said its troops and allied fighters repelled Saturday an attack by the Islamic State group on a strategic area held by the government in southern Aleppo province.

The attack took place in Khanaser, southeast Aleppo -- a strategic region that links Aleppo with central and western Syria. The area has changed hands many times during the conflict.
