Speaker won't run for GOP leader
WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Mike Johnson will be stepping aside from Republican Party leadership after the GOP's wipeout in the midterm elections, declining to run for House minority leader in the new Congress.
Johnson is expected to stay on as a rank-and-file member from Louisiana when the Congress convenes in January. Johnson's decision sets up a fierce internal party battle for his replacement as GOP leader.

President accepts election results
JERUSALEM -- Israeli President Isaac Herzog accepted the certified results of last week's election and began consultations with party representatives on forming a new government.
Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's party nor that of his main challenger, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, secured an outright majority in parliament. Both sides are now locked in negotiations to persuade smaller parties to join a governing coalition. Netanyahu and his supporters have made unsubstantiated claims that Arab-led parties had "stolen" the election. Israel's election commission said it had found no fraud in the vote.

Iranian officials celebrated the rejection of the Republican Party and President Donald Trump by voters in the U.S. midterm elections.
Iran's chief negotiator praised Americans for saying "no to war" in a social media post. The region remains on edge over possible renewed U.S. military operations against Iran.

Police arrest activists outside hearing
LONDON -- Supporters of Palestine Action were arrested outside the U.K. Supreme Court as justices heard the group's challenge to its designation as a terrorist organization.
A lower court ruled the ban unlawful, but the Court of Appeal reversed that decision in June. The group argues that most of its actions do not meet the legal definition of terrorism.
