Meta is launching a personal artificial intelligence agent, Muse, for people 18 and over. The parent company of Instagram and Facebook said the agent can help with day-to-day tasks like schedules, shopping and long-term goals.
Meta is stressing the safety and privacy features of the agent. It launched Tuesday and is only available in the U.S.
Oil prices keep rising and weigh on Wall Street
U.S. stocks fell in their return to trading from a three-day weekend after the latest fighting in the war with Iran pushed oil prices higher.
The S&P 500 sank 0.6% Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.2%, and the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.3%. They felt pressure after the cost for a barrel of Brent briefly neared $99.50. More expensive oil has worsened worries about inflation and is giving extra heft to a couple of reports on inflation that are coming later this week.
US hits Iran's aviation sector with sanctions
The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on additional elements of Iran's aviation industry.
On Tuesday, the Treasury Department targeted more than two dozen commercial and private airlines as well as foreign cargo service providers. The latest actions are part of the Trump administration's Operation Economic Outcast campaign that is aimed at severing "critical financial lifelines" for the already heavily sanctioned Iranian government. The new penalties focus on the remaining facets of Tehran's beleaguered aviation ecosystem, which Washington has sanctioned for years.
TSA brings back gate access for some
The Transportation Security Administration is allowing eligible TSA PreCheck members without tickets to pass through security and enter gate areas at some U.S. airports.
The move is a start toward reviving a tradition that largely disappeared after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks 25 years ago this week. Before the attacks, individuals without tickets generally could accompany departing friends and relatives to their gates or meet them there upon arrival.
More than 1,000 UK flights canceled
A technical issue in the U.K. air traffic control system has led to the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights, according to Flightradar24.
Britain's National Air Traffic Services said there was a problem in its system on Tuesday that affected departing flights. The problem was fixed but delays were expected to continue.
China's Huawei faces racketeering trial in US
The world's biggest supplier of telecommunications network gear faces a criminal trial in New York. Jury selection began Tuesday in the U.S. case against China's Huawei Technologies.
The company has been charged by U.S. authorities with stealing technology and trade secrets. U.S. prosecutors also claim it installed surveillance equipment that enabled Iran to spy on protesters and violated U.S. sanctions on North Korea. Huawei denies the allegations.
Sites to offer algorithm opt-out in Australia
Australian social media users would be given a choice to opt out of algorithms under proposed laws announced by the government.
A government statement said on Tuesday social media platforms would be required to send a notification to new and existing users offering them a choice over their default feed. Users would be able to opt in to having their default feed include personalized content recommended by an algorithm.
