Harriet Brubaker of 2713 Sixth Ave. won the General Electric oldest refrigerator contest with her 23-year-old 1928 GE model, which had been trouble-free since purchased from Spence Electric. She was to receive a new one from the Diamond Supply Co., Hollidaysburg.

William Bowes Jr. and David Gummo, both 17 years old and from Howard, Pa., were killed in a two-car crash on Route 220, six miles north of Tyrone. Two others were injured. In other bad news, a three story historical home at 2606 Broad Ave. which held the office of Dr. Stanley Kaczor was gutted by fire. No injuries were reported.

Altoona Area School District spokesman Tom Bradley said the new state law banning smoking within 50 feet of school property would also apply to Mansion Park, and those leaving the park to smoke would have to buy another ticket to get back in.

Bob Kutz, president of the Altoona Area Building Trades Council, which represented dozens of different trade unions, asked the Altoona School Board to consider remodeling the high school rather than spend $50 million on a new one.

The Pennsylvania State Highway Department reported that the new 1.8-mile road from Juniata Gap Road to the Route 36 Buckhorn Road was almost complete. Superintendent Elmo Young reported that many rattlesnakes were being encountered and many large boulders had to be broken up.
The Blair County Game, Fish and Forestry Association in cooperation with the Altoona Park and Recreation Board, planned a fishing derby contest at the Ivyside Warming Dam at Penn State Altoona for two age divisions for both boys and girls with prizes to be given.

Wolf Furniture Co. in downtown Altoona held a ribbon-cutting to open its completely redesigned store adding the name "Showcase" and featuring a gift shop called "The Brightside." Company president Gerald P. Wolf presided.
The Christian Women's Club of Altoona held a fashion show at the Sheraton Motor Inn with clothes provided by Fishers in the Pleasant Valley Shopping Center. Special guest was Esther Harris of the John Robert Powers School of Fashion in Washington, D.C. She was the wife of Lt. Commander Stephen Harris of the U.S.S. Pueblo, held captive for one year by North Korea.

A deal for Norfolk Southern Railroad to pay landowners along its tracks for installing underground fiber optic lines was being delayed by lawyer objections. Blair County had 602 landowners affected, Cambria 847 and Huntingdon 425.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission was considering raising the horsepower limit of 10 to 25 horsepower for boats on seven state park lakes, including Prince Gallitzin. It would allow boats to travel at about 13 mph.

The roof and part of a wall on a building owned by J&J Recycling at Margaret Avenue and 19th Street collapsed, causing the city to close the road there. It was once owned by Sky Brothers food distributors.
The McEldowney Academic Scholarship Fund, 13 years old and in memory of the late Altoona City Councilman Richard L. McEldowney, presented scholarships to 22 local high school students this year and a total of $225,000 since it started.
