Guthrie makes a plea to kidnappers
Savannah Guthrie says her family is living a nightmare nearly six months after her mother's disappearance.
In a video released Monday, she pleads with her mother's kidnappers to reveal her location. Eighty-four-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her home near Tucson, Arizona, on Feb. 1. Authorities believe she was taken against her will. Savannah Guthrie has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to her mother's recovery.

US looks to boost anti-China spending
WASHINGTON -- The Trump administration is preparing to ramp up funding by hundreds of millions of dollars for programs designed to counter China's growing influence worldwide.
It comes after having put a halt to many of those initiatives last year during a flurry of budget and personnel cuts. The administration notified Congress late last week that it intends to spend $175.8 million to replace outdated and aging undersea telecommunications cables in the Caribbean and Central America to prevent China from moving in.

Influencer brothers to remain in jail
MIAMI -- Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate will remain in jail at least two more weeks until their next hearing. The brothers are fighting extradition to the United Kingdom where they are accused of rape and sex trafficking.
U.S. Magistrate Lauren Louis on Monday set a detention hearing for Aug. 13 to determine whether the Tates should stay in jail or be released as they fight extradition.

Zelenskyy, new PM discuss defense
LONDON -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and new U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham have discussed joint drone projects and Ukraine's urgent need for ballistic missile interceptors during a visit to a British naval base.
Burnham says Monday's visit is intended to underline "unwavering" British support for Ukraine. Zelenskyy's trip is the first by a foreign leader since Burnham took office a week ago.

US walks out on France at UN meeting
UNITED NATIONS -- U.S. diplomats walked out as their French counterparts spoke at the United Nations after the European ally criticized the Trump administration's human rights record.
The surprise move Monday followed U.S. opposition to giving the U.N. human rights chief another four-year term. The reappointment on Friday got overwhelming support. France's U.N. Mission in Geneva tweeted after the vote that "the world no longer listens to" the U.S. about human rights.

Gunmen attack community, kill 30
ABUJA -- Gunmen have attacked a community in northwestern Nigeria, killing at least 30 people and injuring several others.
Residents reported the attack occurred late Sunday night in Naridon village, Kaduna state. Derek Christopher, from the Southern Kaduna Peace and Security Network, noted this is the second attack on the community in a year.
